Talking New Olds guy to the club. 54 Rocket

Hello everyone,

Just introducing myself to the club. My name is John. I got a 54 olds super Rocket 88, 4 door and I live outside of Washington D.C, in Sterling Virginia. I'm working on my Olds and was wondering if anybody knows where I can fine replacement springs for my hood hinges. The hood dosen't stay up very well when opened and to be honest with you, I'm getting pretty tired of hitting my head!

Welcome! Seems we had another newbie '54 owner join us just last week?

Hood springs could be a hard part to locate. Best bet is to look for parts cars and see if they have them to sell.

Welcome I have a 56 Super 88. You can try Fusick.com or USApartssupply.com they have most items.

Talking thanks for the quick response

I've checked the usual places like Kanter and Fusick and didn't find them. I was wondering if there's a spring manufacturing type of company out there.

It's not the springs...

check this out (copied from an email from them)

Welcome

don’t waste time and money on springs (unless they are distorted or been in a fire). 99% of the time it is the elongated holes in which the rivets are pressed. Send them to us and for $240 plus shipping (about 20 bucks), we will make them better than new.

Here is what we do - All hinges are completely disassembled, cleaned and bead blasted. Hinges are carefully inspected for wear or damage. Repairs are made as needed on all bolt slots, teeth and pivot points (if applying). Repairs are also made on the ribbed shoulder on which the plates slide. We re-bore holes and install new, superior, oversized rivets that retain the stock appearance and provide better than OEM reliability. Please let us know if you would like additional information or if you would like to place an order. We will assign a work order number prior to you shipping your hinges to us.

Also, take a peek at our web site www.sms-auto.com

Welcome aboard Johnfig.

Good information Gordon, I always thought it was the springs. I lucked out on my new hood it stands up proud now like it should and I was about to look for new ones on my old hood, probably would have wasted my money...Tedd
