John here, I picked my second 1965 Starfire convertible last November, some 50 years after my first one as a student at the University of Miami. We have been doing about 200 miles a month lately, mainly in the evenings with top down. With such low production numbers, only 2,236 ragtops produced in 1965, I probably have the dubious distinction of going the longest time between owning them. Interestingly the engine block number corresponds to a 1966. I do not push this one quite as hard as I did the first one. Previous owners had it repainted in the original color, installed new convertible top, electronic ignition, replaced suspension and exhaust parts. So far we had to have leaks repaired in hydraulics for the top and recently had a retrosound radio, modern sound, original (almost) look installed with 4 speakers and amp. At 80 mph with top down sound is clear and sharp. We are still running the carbureted 425 and TH-400 tranny. We have gone to a few shows and have yet to see another (1961 - 1966) Starfire. Stay well, enjoy your Oldsmobile!

We actually measured before we got it. 1965 Starfire length in 217 inches so we have about 6 inches to spare. 30 inch wide lip at back of garage makes it necessary to back in. Low tech parking system, duck tape on the floor, 2 X 4 boards against lip and some cushions on back wall. Added a strip of red tape since this photo. We try to take it out at least once a week. Nothing like an evening top down cruise along Fort Lauderdale beach. Runs and rides nice.

Beautiful starfire!!

Hi Sandpiper13,

My name is Allen Schweitzer & I'm from Boston. My dad had a 1965 Starfire convertible with the same Mojave Mist color that yours is in. I haven't seen another convertible in that color and when I saw yours online it really brought me back. He bought it brand new in 1965, drove to his wedding in it, drove both me & my brother home from the hospital when we were born in it, I learned to drive with it. I LOVED that car. His was loaded with almost every option other than tilt wheel, auto-dim headlights and power door locks. He literally had every other option including AC, power vent windows, cruise control, factory hazard lights & more. Unfortunately the car was destroyed in 1988 when a short in the power top motor caused a fire that eventually consumed the whole car. I was driving it at the time & not a week goes by when I don't think about that car & how cool it was.

If you have additional pics of the car you can share with me I'd really appreciate it. I'm at allenschweitzer@yahoo.com. If you ever want to sell it, let me know.

Either way, congrats on an ultra-rare, amazing car. I hope you're getting a lot of good use out of it in sunny FL!

Thanks & Happy Holidays!!
Allen

Hi, Allen. Welcome to CO. Once you've been around here for a little while, you'll notice things like this thread is four years old and OP hasn't posted anywhere in over two years and has a total of 18 posts to his name.

My main point is, you shouldn't expect a reply from him very soon ... but never say never!

Appreciate that, @BangScreech4-4-2 ! I recognize it's a Hail-Mary but there are likely less than 4 cars on the planet that fit that description so when I see one, I do what I can. Love what you did to that blue 442, BTW. Sweet ride!!
