New guy from WI call me cheapskate

Hi. I am a new member as of yesterday. I thought I would tell you guy's a little about myself. I am a construction worker from WI that has always liked Oldsmobile. I had a 79 cutlass, with the 260 ya hoo, in high school. Shortly after I purchased a 68 442 convertible. I did a half way decent job getting it back on the road. 1996 I married and long story short, I sold the car. With the condition I would be able to purchase another one. 1999 I purchased a 68 442 holiday coup from Arizona. I started to restore it 4 years ago. This was an auto car but i converted it into a 4 speed and heard it run for the first time in may this year. I built a frame to spin the body to do a frame off restoration. I am not a pro but I feel I did a pretty good job with this car. I have some pic to upload, if I can figure out how to do that, and I will have more latter. Currently I am messing around with gears. I want to keep my 68 o axle rear end but I am struggling to find 323's. I have run the original 256 and 336 in a Pontiac rear end. I have concluded that 323 would be my first choice. If anyone has some, I would love to here from you. I cant find them any ware new or used. If not, I will have to settle for 342. I have never been part of a club so bear with me. I hope to to get to chat with some of you guy's and learn more about Oldsmobile witch is the funnest part of doing a restoration, in my opinion. Thanks.

Welcome to the site! It looks like you've put a lot of work into your car! Yes, hanging out with other people who share the same sickness of collecting and working on Oldsmobiles is part of the hobby Good Luck finding the parts for your rear end. Brian (507OLDS) or Jim (monzaz) should be able to point you in the right direction.

Welcome to CO, cheapskate WI! Nothing wrong with what you did, at all. Congratulations on a job well done. I did most of the body work/paint on mne, over 4 1/2 years, Friday nights/Saturday 8-2 at the local CC close by. Never again! LOL!

Nice car

I run an Muncie M20 with a 10 Bolt 3.42 "O" rear from Brian Trick (507olds). I think it's geared just right. If you haven't bought a tranny yet I would consider one of the more modern 5 or 6 speed trannys. Mine whines pretty loud at 75 mph & an overdrive would be nice

The thought of overdrive sounds good. This might not be a good reason to run a 4 speed but I always wanted to say that my 442, 4 barrel 4 speed dual exaust, has a 4 speed. Is there any truth to the theory of 442 meaning?

My wife's family is from up in your area. She grew up near Larsen. And I like the idea of a WI meetup!

Welcome! that is true for original 64 model. In 65 they offered an auto, but upped engine to 400 cubes so that '4' took the place of the 4 spd. Of course in 66 they offered 3-2's so the 4 barrel part didn't hold true then.

Well, I located a O axle rear end from a private seller 20 miles from my home. The seller thought it had 308 gears. After looking at it and doing a little math, it turned out to have 323 gears. We made a deal for $300. After a week of clean up, sand blasting and paint, the rear end is installed. I am very happy with those gears. They seem to fit me well. Thanks for the info from those of you that replied with your thoughts on gears.

Honestly, I like having it all, and modern transmissions are really are really the best way. My Olds 455 has a 3.73 posi axle and 700R4 tranny with 0.70 lock up od 4th, and like cruising the highway with a 2.56 axle. Know some guys running Keisler TKO 5 speed manual kits with 0.70 5th, and I have a late model Tremec 6 speed Vette, with 3.42 axle. 1500 rpm @ 70 mph, and better part of 30 mpg highway. Stuffs out there, why not use it.

The Badger Chapter of OCA used to hold a show annually in Green Bay. It also holds a show every year in Milw. There there is the Quad States Meet held once a year in either WI, IL or IA. All good chances to meet up with other likeminded folk.
