New guy from sw PA

Hey everyone, my name is Ray and I'm from pa just southwest of Pittsburgh close to Ohio and West Virginia. Long story short 2 years ago my wifes grandfather left me his 68 toronado when he passed away. I grew pretty close to him over the years because I was pretty young when my grandfathers passed and I've been with my wife since we were 16 (now we are 30). Anyway I got the car home a little while after he passed and I actually felt comfortable touching the car, it was his baby. It had sat in the garage since sometime in the early 90's. Got it home went over the basics had to put a fuel pump in it and got it fired up but it was making some tapping noises I didnt care for. I went ahead and pulled the valve covers and noticed some valve train issues. I yanked the engine this weekend and im gonna get started into getting it back on the road for the summer. I'll save all the tech stuff for another thread.

Finally seeing the sun after a few decades

All cleaned up

Thanks everyone. I'll have some engine questions here soon that I'll take over into another thread but really looking forward to being able to go for a cruise.

Welcome to CO. Nice Toronado, so glad to hear you are dedicated to rescuing a fine example of Oldsmobile's engineering prowess. I had a '69, very similar to the '68s except for the rear end treatment. I LOVE the '68-'69 hide-a-ways and chrome wrap-around front bumper, which is what caught my eye when I spotted mine on a used lot back in the mid '80s. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Welcome! Great looking Toro. Nothing quite like late 60s big Detroit (Lansing) iron. Good luck with your project and thanks for saving her.

Nice Toronado. My first car was a '68 Toronado. What a great car it was! Yours appears to be pretty solid and the bumpers look great! Good luck with it.

Little bit of bad news today. I got the engine on the stand and pulled the heads. There's an odd tar like material on the cylinder walls. I'm guessing the rings are coated with it as well. Engine has a pile of miles on it and never has been rebuilt to my knowledge so looks like a full rebuild is going to be in order.
