Just grabbed a 1974 Omega this past weekend. Its yellow with a black vinyl top, side moldings, and pinstripe. Interior is a bucket seat, center console. Its a solid project. While roaming the internet trying to find information on Omegas, I came across a picture that looks exactly like my car. The picture was taken in Sacramento and I bought it in Stockton (1 hour away). Looked more into finding that pic and it led me to this website. I believe I am the owner now of the car from this thread.

Plans are to have this be my daily driver with just a little attitude. First thing is to get in mechanically sound then I'll go from there.

Side note. I'm following that Omega 455 thread closely to see just how much of a PITA it will be and if its worth it.

Nice Omega bud! I really like the pattern of your front seats. My 73 Omega has aftermarket bucket seats. I will be putting my 455 in it pretty soon.

The "S" would stand for sport. I've been looking for my brochure that speaks about the S option,but I do believe this was a 1974 option and didn't apply to 73 Omegas.

 

Is there any way to validate this one being an S? What caught my eye about the car was the fact that it was an original bucket seat center console car. I'd been looking for a good Omega for a while but this was the only one I found with that setup. I thought the pinstriping was unique as well. Haven't seen another one with it.

 

I've seen that car on craigslist. Looks like a solid project. They are pretty cool cars.

I don't know if there is an exact way to verify on paper if your Omega had the S" option aka W28 appearance package. The factory appearance package was a sport wheel,bucket seats, floor console, sport mirrors, sport wheels(III), decals on rear quarters, and I think pin-striping. I believe it should be a K vin car for a four barrel 350. It also could be a 2dr coupe or hatchback. The one "S" that I have seen in person also had "S" emblems just aft of the rear windows. Unfortunately there is not much printed information for Omegas' with this option or Omegas' in general. The GM Heritage Center most likely had the numbers, but who knows if they still have them. It appears you have the items needed though, but I don't still don't have a definite answer to your question if your car can be verified as having the "S" option. But at the end of the day it's another saved Oldsmobile that is getting an Oldsmobile power plant que no.(ya know)

My 5th digit is a K. Wikipedia says the the 8th digit indicates a 4 barrel carb. This is the car I believe I own now back in 2009. Maybe I can get some other Type S owners to tell me where the K is in their VIN. If my car isn't, it sure as hell looks the damn part! The seller told me yesterday that he found the original yellow SS wheels in his sister-in-law's garage....2 hours away!

Wiki is not accurate. For example if your VIN was 3B27K3W100001 the 8th letter is nothing but the plant sequential number. The fifth letter is K would mean 350 4 barrel engine (L34), if the 5th number was H that would represent a 350 2 barrel engine (L32).So for the 5th number tells you the engine code. 3W stands for Willow Run,Michigan. Try putting your VIN in this decoder and see if it comes back as a Omega S it may not because it's an option and not a model, but it's worth a try here's the link. http://www.v8cars.hu/oldsvin/decode.php. You should invest in a 1974 Oldsmobile Service Manual. I think it is a S. So I think the next step is to plan for your BBO. Lol.

 

Thanks for that link. It shows 1974 Omega 350 4bl. No Type S info. Oh well. Maybe I'll find something when I tear more into the car. Found the owners manual and other pamphlet under the seat today. Service and fisher body manuals were bought on eBay today as well. I can tell already that I'm going to enjoy this build!
