New guy here - need help 1969 442 W30 Convertible
Hi
new guy here, not new to Olds or classic cars......
I have recently retired and I am now looking for a toy!
I am hoping to find a Red or Black 1969 442 W30 convertible car.
This has always been my favorite Oldsmobile.
I have found these pictures of a car that match my favorite color combination.
Does anyone know if this car is available? or does anyone know anything about it?
The two pictures of the car are from the 2011 NEOC Show.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for letting me be a part of this community.

Welcome to the site. I hope you can find the answers to all your questions.
Any chance it was built or shipped to Canada? That might help for getting paper work.
The bottom line for me is, real or not don't pay too much, and don't pay for any rust.

Welcome to the site.
Fill out your profile with location. What is your budget for your car?
Are you looking for a project to restore, a number 3 driver or a frame off restored #1 show car?

Welcome to the site... You have set your standards quite high if you are searching for a specific 69-W30... Best of luck in your quest for the right vehicle and be cautious of the clones...

" be cautious of the clones"
Or, embrace them- get a cheap [ha!] '68-9 Cutlass convertible, install your 425 and replica D heads, any old TH400, 442 springs, big radiator, repro red inner fenders, scoops, air cleaner... and have what you want, right now, affordably.
When folks remark that it's not "real" you can offer to follow up on any leads they have on a "real" one, and meanwhile enjoy the heck out of the "not real" one.

Ambitious indeed...Hope your pockets are deep. FYI if you didnt know, you're looking for 1 of 121 total W30 verts produced for 1969. 91 sticks and 30 ATs. Im sure there were a few black and red units produced. Good luck and yes post pics. Also ask away with questions. Thats why were all here.

Thank you for the welcome.
Yes I know the car is rare and that it will cost me some good money to purchase one but I am prepared to do so.
In my wanted ad on this site, I received a reply about a fellow named John Welsh of owning this W30 convertible at one time.
Does anyone know this John Welsh?
Thanks

Rarer than a W-30 but you need docs for these. Not sure if the gear is correct/was available for a W-32.

Nice car, thank you for sharing that car with me but I'm set on a W30.
I found the pictures on the Olds Club site at the National in MA.
Is the car on the east coast????? Still sounds like I need to find John Welsh (sp?), he might have more information.
Thanks

If you Google him he's a member of the NEOC. There are many member here from that club. Someone will get the message to him. His phone number is listed on their newsletter

Hi guys,
A very productive day. I want to thank everybody for the messages on here and privately. Great news - I was able to talk to John.
John did sell the Red 69 W30 convertible however he is going to provide me with the contact information to the new owner.
The red car had no paperwork but had all the W30 components including the numbers matching drivetrain. John does have another 69 W30 convertible, automatic which is currently painted yellow with a black interior.
John suggested that since red and black is the ONLY color combo I want that he could change the cowl tag On the yellow car to represent a red original car???He also stated that nobody would be able to tell that the tag had been switched? Is this true??? I've never heard of this being done before? Can anybody elaborate on this practice?
Anyone know this yellow car?
Thanks again everybody.....hopefully soon I will have my car.
You guys are the best!

Good morning,
I never said that switching the tag is something that I would do or be a part of.
I just want a real car, nothing unethical or illegal to achieve my goal.
This is what John told me since he said finding a car to match my criteria would be hard to find.
Thanks for the input , will be staying away from the "yellow" car.

Why? The cowl tag is not legally protected. It does not contain the VIN and has no registration or titling information on it. While I'm not condoning this, swapping the cowl tag is no more illegal than adding options during a body-off.

#25
Keep in mind that the VIN derivative stamp is on the block and there's no difference between a W-30 and non-W G-block. Similarly, a four speed would be the same whether is was in a W-car or not. The only thing would be if the car were an AT and had an OW trans. And even then, it could still be a numbers-matching case. Nothing was said about swapping the trans OW tag...

Whenever there is a question about a faked cowl tag, as far as I am concerned, the car mightswell have started out as a sh&t brown, peg leg, 2 speed automatic Cutlass. Yeah, I know we are talking about 2 different cars.

For my personal information what is the differences in a W30 and W32 ? According to my research, there were only 25 W-32's built in convertibles. Wouldn't it normally be more desirable to own than a regular W-30 convertible. In an above post Diego mentioned something about the gear maybe not being available in the W-32, but the shifter looked the same as one I saw online in a W-32. Larry

Used a 9253 carb so no special carb. Dist number was different and don't recall number at the moment. Air cleaners , scoops and Jose the same on both . On the w32 you had more a selection of rears than the w30

Far as all the other interesting fore mentioned information above ; my suggestion run away from these cars and him.
Also far as potential future purchase - in the 68/69 land no
Paper work be Leary .

As noted, the W32 was lower HP than a W30 and automatic only. Yeah, they are rare, and yeah, they are desirable, but they are NOT the ultimate output Olds for that year. Rarity alone does not mean desirability or value.
FYI, the 1969 W32 essentially became the 1970 W30 automatic, which had the less radical cam that allowed the car to be ordered with power brakes and even A/C.

Thank you all for helping me out!
I will stay clear of the "yellow" for sure! I want the real deal.
dnmfranco, you seem to know these cars pretty well. Can you please elaborate and give me more information that would be useful in order for me to find the right car?
Thanks guys,

I think there's still a pretty good case for fraud. Or at least a conspiracy to commit it or something. And I think the guy's business practices in general might benefit from a little look-see. If he's willing to alter a cowl tag for a total stranger, think what lengths he'd go to for a friend!

Absolutely -- just because you need to look before you leap doesn't mean you shouldn't leap at all. Unfortunately the fact that you're looking for a very rare car to begin with and to make matters worse, you need a specific color combination, may mean you've painted yourself into a bit of a corner.
Prepare for a painstaking and expensive journey, but the destination (if you can get there) will be worth it!

I agree with you 69442 ragtop - this is going to be a hard car to find and then the color, maybe I'm dreaming???
I will have the contact information of the new owner of the red convertible that I wanT. John sold the red 69 W30 convertible after the Nationals in Sturbridge.
I will need someone to inspect the car for me if the current owner is interested in selling it. The car is still out east and I'm located on the west coast. Anyone who could check the car out for me if I get lucky??
I found the "restamped parts" thread on here and that scared the SH$$ out of me. I don't want to get screwed like many from what I have read on this board.
I really thank all of you for this help with my search of finding my dream car.

Seriously, where on the east coast is it? I'm in the northern VA area, near D.C.
