Just wanted to stop in and say hey.

Picked up a 1969 Cutlass supreme, has a 455 with "g" heads I beleive. It does have some spark knock I need help adressing. Maybe timing?

I look forward to being around on the forums and meeting some new people!

Welcome aboard! The motor has '71 heads on it, I have a '71 455 lying on the garage floor from a Delta 88. FYI, the S and Supreme are two separate models, so be sure to specify when asking Q's. Pinging can be addressed by checking timing and especially checking to make sure the vacuum advance is working correctly.

If you are getting spark knock I would check the timing first. Are you running decent quality gas that hasn't been in the tank for 9 months?

In 1969 (and all model years prior to 1970) the S and Supreme used the same sheet metal and differed only in trim and base equipment level. It was not until the 1970 models that the Supreme got the different notchback body style.

Well yesterday it started idling bad, still runs good just cant idle. Also I smell raw fuel. Looked at the carb yesterday Immediately upon shut off and it seems the right float is just pouring in fuel (getting hard to start). It is a Holley 750 Double pumper. Any ideas on what to do? Maybe replacement suggestions?

I know alot of people like them but I have had nothing but bad experiences with Holley's. IMHO, I'd Junk the Holley and get a Qjet.

That's what "spose" to be on it in the first place.

Thats seems to be the general consensus. I may take it out and put on an edelbrock (it has the olds 455 performer mani on it). Any suggestions on a cfm to run? I was thinking going with a 750 again.

Great, another 69 now I have to listen to Jamsbo crow. Nice looking car. Before you dump the Holly, check the float adjustment, download a trouble shooting guide from Holly, it may be something simple. I am one of the guys who likes hollys, there are several that do. Just trying to save you money. If you feel you need to change to a different brand then go with Qjet not edelbrock. 750 cfm is the right way to go

Well today I pulled off the ole Holley 750 Double pumper in favor of a Edelbrock performer 750 with the electric choke.

It seems it runs smoother but I have lost power. That old off the line torque isnt there anymore!!!!!


Any opinions? Should I get someone to tune it for me? Should I go back to the ole Double pumper?

Thats been a common compliant with the edelbrock. Most on this site will suggest you go with an original year Qjet they are good carbs. I like the Holly myself. Go online and get a carb manual for the Holly and work with it first is my suggestion. You'll get other suggestions just hold on

I know this is generally frownd upon, but whats involved in putting a SBC in the car? Its a TH400 tranny, but as far as engine mounts etc.?

I can't wait to get mine off of my car. I'm building a qjet for it right now. I cant seem to get rid of a low rpm bog. I've tried everything and am convinced it's the carb.

You would have to change too much to make it any where near easy. Going with a Qjet would be an easier way to go.

Spend some time tweaking what you have and you will be much happier in the end product than swapping in a sbc. Welcome to the site.

Why put a SBC in your car? I thought you were trouble shooting driveability problems, not a damaged engine?
