New '74 W-30 H/O owner
New '74 W-30 H/O owner
Greetings,
Never owned an Olds, but a '74 H/O recently caught my eye. Asked some questions on the Hurst Olds section, some gentlemen helped me out, and I agreeded to the purchase. Will not receive it till next week. Never really being into Oldsmoble, I have a lot of questions and reading to do.
One question I asked on the H/O section that hasn't been answered yet, (and I'm not sure "reading" will answer)----- the car has been painted, and is really closer to a "cream" color, than what I think of as "white". Is the '74 white, really white, or could what I call cream be correct?
Another question that I will be looking for an answer while I am reading is exactly what does W-25, W-30, (I seem to remember seeing W-31 somewhere?), mean? If no one wants to take the time to answer, that's cool, I'm going to do some homework anyway.
Thanks in advance for any help I can get.
Mack

Congrats on your purchase, Mack! Those are cool cars! There is a white '74 H/O sitting in a salvage yard near me. It is a true white. For fun, when you get the car, pull the numbers off the Body Tag up near the cowl on passenger side and double-check paint codes, trim codes, etc. Then, go to a site such as TCPGlobal.com and look up the numbers in their Color Library.
I read where you mentioned the white interior on another thread. I will warn you ahead of time that finding good white interior plastic trim is impossible. For whatever reason, white was the least resistant to UV and first to dry rot. I know...I have a white swivel bucket interior and have not found anything more than coat hooks that were worth bringing home from the many salvage yards and cars I have picked. Good news is that much of that trim is interchangeable with other '73-'77 GM "A" bodies. Best get used to the idea of painting whatever other color you can find (used) if you need to replace parts and using a quality plastic compatible paint such as SEM. Might get lucky on finding white door panels and qtr panels, though. If you need help, feel free to contact me.

W31 does not apply to these cars as they were built only from 1968-1970, and not available on any Hurst. The W25 & W30 in '74 & '75 indicate which engine that it has, the W25 is the 350, and W30 is the 455.
Post up pics of what ya got please.
Im sure Gary the 73-77 Olds advisor will chime in and help.
Thanks for everyone's interest and help.
Where did the car come from? Not sure. Current owner said he picked it up at an auction in Arizona.
As to the shape of the car, the dash, most of the plastic trim around the windows, and the weatherstripping that seals the doors to the side windows needs to be replaced. The rest of the car is in pretty good shape. A gentleman has contacted me about the dash, but I sure would appreciate any help I can get on finding the weatherstrips.
I would be proud to share some pictures of the car with you. I read the "how to post pics" thread, and will try. It won't be until the end of the week, but I will try.
Thanks for your help and interest.

If the car came from AZ, that would explain the sun-baked interior. Should have seen my interior...lol!
When you say "weatherstripping that seals the doors to the side windows", are you referring to the inside and outside window felts that run along the top of the door (outers) and along the top of the inner door panels? If so, repros are available from places such as The Parts Place, OPGI, etc.

Who else carries stuff for the car? Unless I am overlooking it, Year One and Classic Industries does not. So we have OPGI, The Parts Place, and ----- ?
Thanks again
Yep...those are the ones from The Parts Place. OPGI has them under pt# WF05036. Think Ecklers has them also.
Thing you'll need to learn in your quest to find replacement parts is which ones are interchangeable with other GM "A" bodies of this era. These window felts are one of them. All '73-'77 Chevelles/Malibus, Cutlasses, Centurys, Regals, El Caminos used the same ones.
You mentioned the interior sail panel trims and other upper headliner trims are in need of replacement. None of those are available new; except the "A" pillars (blk only). You'll need to search for used ones and that is where some knowledge of which pcs interchange with other "A" bodies widens the search. As mentioned previously, finding good white pcs is virtually impossible...so, plan on painting whatever color you do find. I've got some pcs...but, no sail panels at this time. Also, be aware that sail panels from '73 cars WILL NOT work because they were notched at the top to accomodate the non-retractor shoulder straps.
