New '69 Cutlass S project
Hey everyone! Just picked up a pretty clean 69 Cutlass S. Dark green exterior with mint light green interior. Came with a 396021F 455 with a TH400. Recently bought a clean set of C heads, Edelbrock Torker intake manifold and a Holley 3310 750cfm vac. secondary and hedman headers. Doing a .030 bore, keith black pistons, port/polish heads and intake, hydraulic comp cam. Hoping for 450hp/500tq. Only think i'm not too sure on is the rear end in the car. Haven't identified if it's posi or not....think it's a 10 bolt. I joined this forum because most of my research on engine/heads/car coding came from here!! Doing a fast rebuild here...NEED to be driving this by spring!!
There's two softball questions I can answer.
First, go to the back of the car, get on the ground and count the number of bolts in the differential cover plate. There should be 10 or 12.
Next put a floor jack under the differential and lift the wheels off the ground. With the tranny in park, attempt to turn one of the rear wheels. If the other wheel turns freely the opposite direction, it ain't a posi.
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum.
I'll have to put my pics up soon! I jacked up the rear end....spun a wheel and the other didn't move? Does this mean it's open' or blown?
So today I bought a shell of a pretty clean '68 for $200! Won't be needing the roof, firewall area or very rear between the tail lights but plan on using the rockers, parts of the floor, trunk pan and outer wheels next winter. Tore down the 455 today and I'm pretty confused...PLEASE HELP!!
396012F (No a on there). This should mean 68-72 right?
VIN pad under #1 cylinder = 33Mxxxxxx. This means '73 from Lansing doesn't it?
J heads = '73-76 I've read.
Crank does not have an 'n' on it...but the crank flange has the 'U' shape and I've read that means '73-76...is this right?
F8 is stamped on the rear of the block.
Thanks guru's!

While jacked up, if both tires go the same way, mark the driveshaft and the tire.
Count the revolutions of the driveshaft per 1 revolution of the tire will give you a close approximation of the ratio!

I'll give it a shot and see what I've got, thanks Rick.
Do you know what it means when both wheels are off the ground and when you spin one the other doesn't spin? Thought it should either go the same or opposite way....not stay still
