My '68 Dream

My '68 Dream
Bought last August, at auction, '68 Olds 442 convertible w/4 speed, fact ac & 8-track. Not quite as advertised. Found that heat/ac does not work because missing "2nd type" manifold and rectangular hose ducting. No wonder it doesn't work! Looking for help to locate manifold & hose. Any help appreciated. I've attached a couple of pics
Please see my album - "Rog's '68 Dream - '68 Olds 442"

It's a W30 ??
Or, has the W36 stripe but not a W30?
To resize photos:
Right click on the photo name in your computer
OPEN AS.... using MS PAIN[t]
SAVE AS and rename it so you do not lose the original HiRes pic
Ctrl-W to resize
Ctrl-s to save again with new name, smaller size
I like to start with save to 60% or 40%
you can ALWAYS ctrl-W again and reduce it even further
HVAC ducting missing a little on your pretty 1968 442?

I generally goes hand in hand with the W30 pkg
But, as I understand it, one could order the stripe alone or the W30 pkg w/o the stripe.
W30 is the enhancement pkg on a 442- Outside Air Induction, heads, cam, etc.
It is hard to tell for sure if a given car was born a W30 but you can certainly look for indications or contradictions
Protecto Plate with engine and trans listed would be nice.
power brakes or lack thereof
AC, ditto
Oh, now I noticed you said factory AC
Well, I recall W30 precluding the AC option so that rules out W30
ID tag on trans if auto trans
Ah, I see you said manual trans... ok.
It's strange to see the W36 stripe on a non-W30 car, and stranger yet to see it done right, placed correctly [as far as I can tell] fore-aft such that at the bottom the stripe is more or less centered in the fender heel. This requires the numerals to be located correctly as well.

Does not have air induction, at least no sign of. It has all original steel on car. Had a repaint 10 yrs ago from original. Correct colors in & out. What else should I look for? Don't have a protecto plate. And haven't found a build sheet. Car has 70K original miles and have title documentation to verify mileage.0

I don't recall a VIN in the above, but it should be like
344678M100123
Any character other than M there precludes W30 also. Pretty sure having AC covered that already.
I would love to help you out on the HVAC ducting but it is extremely rare here in MI to find a '68 with AC. Consequently, I never had such a parts car.

Hi Folks. Thanks for all the info you're feeding me. Have found the ductwork in AZ & KS - on its way. For those who asked, vin is 344678M332408. With some research, I have found they made only 170 W30 convertibles; most were automatics. Only 13 made with 4 speed & fac AC. If anyone has different numbers, I'd love to know about it. Thanks again.

Not sure where you got your info, but a lot of it is wrong.
No W-30 ragtops had AC, and most W-30s were 4-speeds by far.
Additionally, I'm not aware of any combination of options (like 4-speed and AC) for any Olds from the era.

These are more likely the production numbers for your 442 (non W30)
68 442
Convert
148 3-spd manual
1,518 4-spd
3,476 Auto
I have one of the original MT cars also. No idea if it was originally a three or four speed
.....and Joe........the stripe is in the correct location but it was never a stripe car to begin with.
It's called artistic license

Rog, Welcome. Nice 68. Fusicks, and Year One are two great online resources for reproduction parts. Fusick actually manufacturers some of their own parts. Several guys here have barns full of good used stuff as well. So dont be afraid to check out the classified ad sections to look and to post for parts needed.
Many of us own this one year wonder. Some 67 parts interchange some 69 parts inter change. Many 68-72 A bodied GMs have interchangeable parts as well. So if you dont find what you need try looking at the GTO, Chevelle, Skylark world for the non-specific parts.

The rear seat speaker is mounted behind the seat, facing rearward, with a rectangular metal grille. This is within the triangular area where the top pump is mounted. Can be seen when top is up and looking into the well area...pretty damn useless when top is down .

Posting this in Parts Wanted might get a better response. Also, are you looking for the correct 1968 four piston calipers and brackets or the 69-72 single piston design? Repros of either configuration are readily available.
#40
Four piston calipers would be correct for 1967-68. Since they are the same parts as used on 1967-68 Camaros, every single piece is available from repro vendors. Be aware that the four piston calipers cost about ten times as much as the single piston ones.
