Ignition troubles

I have a 70 cutlass and the key would not turn all the way back to the lock position. I replaced ignition cylinder and it still won't turn to the lock position so I can get the key out. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome.

I've got $10 that says you've either converted from column to floor shift or you've installed headers and removed the backdrive linkage from the trans to the steering column.

The lock mechanism is designed to lock the shifter when you lock the steering column, even for a floor shifter. This is done with the linkage rod that goes from the base of the column to the trans. The trans must be in PARK (or REVERSE for a manual trans) for the key to rotate to the LOCK position. Often, if the backdrive rod is removed, the collar in the steering column that blocks the ignition cylinder will rotate out of position, preventing the key from being removed.

Grab the collar where the shifter used to be an rotate it as far counterclockwise as possible. Now try to remove the key.

Note that if the backdrive rod is still in place, it may need to be adjusted. The ends and bushings can wear, causing the same key removal problem.

thanks

Thanks for the tip. I have only had the car for about 3 months and haven't really done anything to it yet. Never really worked on Oldsmobiles before but I am learning. I am a mustang guy (69 mach 1) but I love this car.

Not that I want to lose $10 to Joe, but another possibility is the ignition switch (not the key cylinder) has gone bad. I had one melt from a short, and it limit the travel and the spring back operation.

mmmm maybe the sector gear behind the cylinder. the gear comes out after you pull the cylinder and goes in one way. I removed my plastic gear with needle nose pliers.
