how to get plastic cover off distributor

My name is Brenda and have a 1984 Delta 88 royal Brougham.
I am trying to get plastic cover on top of distributor off so I can get to spark plug wires. The repair manual does not show. Thank you

Welcome Brenda. If you squeeze the two tabs towards the center, it should pop loose.
Then you have to push the wires out one by one. Good luck.

Sounds like you still have original GM plus wires. The ring that you're talking about just comes off with gentle massaging of the plug wire top. Chances are really good that your replacement wires won't have the little glove that ring sits in, so I'd just take the whole top off first and work on it off of the car.

Are you assured that you can get the plug wires back on in the correct order? You have a manual and all that?

It's not that hard, but there are a couple of details to learn... firing order and cylinder numbering [shown on the intake manifold for your convenience], and which way 'round the distributor rotates [CCW as viewed from above].

Digital camera under the hood. Pictures don't lie when it comes to putting things back the way they were.

Smile Octania, Professur & Oldcutlass.

Octania, yes I am going to do 1 at a time and have manual for reference. I hope I get it right.

Professur, Good idea on pics. I will do that too.

right, then
you are replacing the cap and rotor while in there, right?

Replacing one at a time is a good option to start with; knowing how to wire it from scratch is superb.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

repeat until it is memorized...

Isn't it cast right into the intake?

Yes, but bet ya a dollar most peeps will not understand it, in spite of the extra casting that says clearly 'firing order'. Of course if they're working from the passenger side of the car that's not as easy to see especially if the intake is grimy. I don't believe aftermarket intakes have that casting, just OEM.
