Hi, everybody!
Okay, way too enthusiastic for the morning.
My name's Nigel, I'm from PA and live in Denver, CO, now. Got started with Oldsmobiles while I was in college and I had an '86 Cutlass Supreme Brougham that needed a lot of TLC and coaxing to keep going, sort of like the Millennium Falcon.
A friend of mine in college was a former Marine and had 4 GTOs (I want to say 2 64, 65, or 66s, one as a donor, and a 68 and a 69) and a lot of what he knew helped me out, like when I bent the rear axle. Sadly, I don't have that car anymore, but I've kept all the memories! I still have my Olds logo banner hanging in my closet, although these days I drive a Volvo. Say what you will, but the two companies have a lot in common.
Anyway, my entry to this community is more about my departure from my college dream of restoring a '71 Cutlass Supreme, but you'll see that over in the parts for sale area.

Well, Volvo and Oldsmobile were very technically progressive companies--Olds had the first standard safety belts, Volvo the 3-point safety belt.
They were both very much engineering companies--I like to think of Olds as GM's engineering division because of things like Northstar (OnStar), climate control on the Toronado, FWD (even if it was chain-driven), the safety belts, airbags, etc.
Volvo had their Safety Research Centers for things like safety belts, airbags, crumple zones, the integral "roll cage".
Both have race pedigrees: Olds in NASCAR, Volvo in rally. Both were pretty much unrivaled: Olds until the hemi came along and Volvo had some similar experiences (from what I can recall).
Olds had the "Not your father's Oldsmobile" ad campaign and Volvo had "Not your Uncle Olaf's Volvo" ad campaign (a few decades apart).
