Hi! Could use some help!

Hello everyone, I have a 1966 Oldsmobile Jetstar 88 and I have a couple questions on what some of my numbers might mean. First off, it has a 425 swapped in and has B heads. How good are B heads? Also, it came with a 2bbl Rochester so I bought a 4bbl intake and a 600cfm carburetor off Summit racing for it (uninstalled). Should be a good combo right? And finally, I'm trying to figure out what the gear ratio of the rear end is. Two codes on the rear end are either G286 (maybe C286) and 9783383. The last code was pretty hard to make out so it could be wrong. Thanks!

Manifold sounds good, not sure the carb is big enough for the 425???

More experienced folks will chime in.....

Welcome to the site! You said it had a 425 swapped in, but B heads would be correct for a 1966. Are you sure that's not the factory engine? If not then it came out of a 1966 something or other... there should be a code stamped into the end of one head. If they've not been off the engine it would be on the passengerside front. That code can tell us what the application of the engine or at least the head was. Here's an example:

B heads are good castings, if the 2bbl was factory on the engine then it would have had small valves. But they could have come with the large valves if it looks like things have been apart. The code can help determine that.

Are the rear end codes cast into the center pumpkin or stamped in the steel tubes? I'm not familiar with this vintage of full sized rear ends, but that detail may help one of the other members key it out for you.

I thought Jetstars only came with the smaller 330's from factory, could be wrong though. The previous owner said the 425 was swapped in from another car, some other type of 88. Thanks for pointing out that code, I'll check it out tomorrow cause I'm really curious about this engine. The codes were on the pumpkin, I couldn't find any codes on the steel tubes even though I read that there should be some on the passenger's side. Someone told me the ratio could be 3:23.

Two good ways of ascertaining the final drive ratio are to count turns, and to remove the cover and read the tooth counts on the ring gear and divide the smaller # into the larger #.

Jetstar 1 was a big engine big car with bucket seats and console.
Jetstar 88 was the small engine big car.

What is the VIN?

The code is stamped on the front of the passenger side head, but if the heads were off for a valve job they might have been swapped, so check the rear of the driver's side head also.

I checked all over and couldn't find any code. I tried searching in other threads on this site for info but does anyone know whether this engine is 39 degrees or 45? I'm looking for a camshaft
