As I recall, the 4-Jet's number was stamped onto an aluminum tag that was held on by one of the air horn screws - once the tag is gone, there s no way to know the number.
I'm not sure what you do in those situations, other than to find out what the number is supposed to be, and hope for the best.
Maybe I'm wrong and someone will correct me and make you happy.

When I rebuilt the carb in my '67 Delta 88, I didn't need to know the carb number. I bought the kit at Autozone for $20, and all they needed to know was that it was a 425 with 2-barrel carb. The kit was just fine as having the parts, pieces, and gaskets I needed.
