Help. new here. 350 sits to low and to far to the left

Help. new here. 350 sits to low and to far to the left

I'm trying to finish reassembling a 1970 w31 after putting on core support I went to see how the fan shroud was fitting it was hitting the fan on the bottom so I took out the rubber isolatores under the core support but shroud still hitting the fan at bottom. It has the proper 2261 motor mounts and the prober 350 mounts I'm baffled any ideas? Thanks mark

Too low could be a trans mount that is too tall, causing the engine to be tilted forward (down) slightly. But too far to the left? Is the engine actually to the left, or is the radiator support not aligned properly? Is it slightly high and to the right, which would cause the fan to hit on the bottom and be to the left, in respect to the shroud.

I saw an Olds changed from 3 row core to 4 and the original top plate was modified, and the shroud sat too high and the fan rubbed at the bottom.

I was also thinking that the support was not centered. Also, are the mounts for the front radiator support too thick or the wrong ones?

Hello the motor measures 1/2" off center in the frame. Core support is centerd in frame. it's the original 4 bar core support. It seems to
Be in the motor mounts but they show to be corect. Any idea how much clearence I should have between oil pan and cross member? At the very front I have a little less than 1/2" thanks for your suggestions mark

sounds like one or more of your parts are not correct for the application...double check your parts making sure you dont have something from another year or different car you should have a process of elimination...a 72 core support or a 68 mount for example could make a big difference

This must be the uber-rare Cutlass Supreme with the OFFSET ENGINE that the header companies measured to check header fitment, thus the warning that 68-72 headers WILL NOT FIT SUPREMES!!!



My '68 had shroud interference also, at the bottom; I solved it with a saw.

Back then you could just grab another shroud, not so now.

Let's recap. The 2261 mounts are correct. If you have the original frame mounts bolted in the correct locations on the crossmember, then the engine CANNOT physically be in the wrong place. I'm 99.99% sure you DO have the correct frame mounts, because if you had the 69-72 BBO frame mounts, the oil pan would have hit the crossmember before you could get the bolt in the motor mount.

Having established that, here are the other potential sources of trouble.

1) Trans crossmember and mount. If the rear of the trans is too high and offset, this will slew the front of the motor the other way. Look at the bottom flange of the frame. I have one car where an idiot P.O. jacked the car under the open section of the frame rail, deforming it where the crossmember bolts. This caused exactly the problem of the rear of the trans sitting too high. Note also that the crossmember may be tweaked.

2) Core support in the wrong place. New rubber mounts can cause it to sit higher, raising the bottom of the shroud.

3) Shroud not installed properly. Are you sure the bottom mounts for the shroud are not distorted and that the bottom of the shroud is installed in them properly.

4) Incorrect shroud or fan.

hello trans crossmember looks good, the core support is center of fram holes and sqere off the fire wall and all this miss alingment and i dont even have the rubbers under core support, the fan shroud has 69-70 stamped on it, any ideas how i could conferm this is a 1970 core support? i dont see anything stamped any were on it. here are some photos

the mount looks ok the fan looks ok the shroud (69 71? looks like) does not look like it is sitting right, is the support bent? like joe said the trans mount could be tweaked also,...seems like you can rule out fan blade and motor mount so your narrowing it down

I would like to thank you all for all of your suggestion. I just left a guys house that has a 70 cutlass to take some mesurments all mesurments I took conferm I have a 70 core support. Doing some more measuring his motor is 1/2" off center to the right of the frame just the opposite of mine wich is 1/2"off center to the left. Is the a difrence in right and left motor mounts?

my understanding is the mounts are the same for A body,if they are original mounts, if they are new mounts anything could be possible as far as one be slightly off.but they should be the same

Sounds like something is out, kind of need good clear pics to see what exactly you are saying. If the car hasn't been hacked on or tweaked by an accident the engine should sit centered between the frame rails.

Any one know what size fan it should have for this 1970 w31 I see we're there is a 17-1/2" fan Avalible for this year and it's running a 19" fan

I don't know the answer to whether or not the 19" fan size is correct for your application, but certainly a smaller fan will probably correct your issue. It still makes me wonder why your cars engine is off center in the other direction. Did you check the trans mount and support as Joe P suggested?
