help decode vin.
help decode vin.
New to the site. I have a 1991 cutlass supreme 2 door 3.4 with a 5 speed manual trans. I need to know how to check my vin to see if this car is a rare one or not. vin# 1g3wh14x7md369694.. The last 6 numbers look like they were hand scribed on the vin plate. Please help...

1 - US Build
G - General Motors
3 - Oldsmobile
WH - Cutlass Supreme
1- Body Style: 2 door coupe/sedan
4 - Restraint Code: Automatic seat belts
X - Engine type: Check your vin again; there's no x listed for engine type and the 3.4 was not a 1990 production engine. Are you sure it's not a 'V'?
7 - Check digit
L - (you don't show this, but this is the code for 1990)
MD - ?? should be just 1 letter here: M is Lansing MI; D is Doraville GA
369694 - production sequence number
All told there should be 17 numbers/letters which you have but not all match the VIN decoding information from GM.

as for "rarity", it looks like you could poke around here for production numbers:

I guess the question I have to consider is whether the OP mistyped 1990 instead of 1991. I used 1990 as the principle of the decode I gave. If he meant 1991, I agree with the info you provided.
Thanks for that. Now it makes a lot more sense because the "M" I was referring to is the code for the 1991 model year, and X is the code for the 3.4 V6. D for Doraville as mentioned earlier.
The car isn't rare. Were you thinking it was because it was a 5 speed manual trans? Both the 3.4 with 4 spd AT and 5 spd MT obtained the same mpg ratings. The 3.1 V6 and 2.3 4 cyl were the ones that helped boost the important ratings the gov't needed auto manufacturers to strive for.
As far as production numbers for 1991?
Cutlass Supreme Coupes: 52241
Cutlass Supreme SL Coupes: 4253
Since this car has a 3.4 it's in the upper category so there were quite a few made and probably still quite a few surviving. There is no record I can find about how many would have had AT or MT.
Right around this time the sales and productivity of Olds was on the decline and the number of CS coupes didn't hit anywhere near the stride it had in the 70's and 80's. IMO it was the start of the 'writing on the wall'.

According to my information... Standard Catalog of Oldsmobile 1897 - 1997 the production numbers should be as follows.... (Unless I have some major misprints)
Cutlass Supreme Coupe: 16766 (4-Dr: 52241)
Cutlass Supreme SL Coupe: 4253 (4-Dr: 15653)
Cutlass Supreme Convertible: 1515
Cutlass Supreme International Coupe: 2304 (4-Dr: 7357)
Fair enough guys, but I wasn't listing sedans, verts of International Coupes because that's not what he has.
The numbers I got were obtained from the Wild About cars website (which lists official Olds production 1897 -2004)
doby - any chance you can post that VIN you were describing where you said it looked like the last 6 digits were hand scribed?
