hello from philly pa

Hey everybody, i have a 1970 cutlass supreme that was given to me by my father.

Car was last taken on road in 1992, while my dad was parking it and he had a stroke and ran into the garage back wall. i was about 3 or 4 then. Everyone was concerned with his health so the car was forgotten. noone touched the car since then so it just sat and sat. Waiting for the day to see the light again.

I got a 1988 chevy camaro and worked on that, to get familiar with cars and learn my way around the engine and body. i joined thirdgen.org and boy were they helpful.

so now we end up in august of this year, i walk out to the garage and look at the cutlass and get to thinking, "i think im ready to get u back on the road for the world to see".

I get into the car, turn key, no surprise battery dead. Go out to the camaro pull out battery, pop hood, put battery in. Turn key, engine turns over but not starting. Grab can of starter fluid, turn key. "putter, putter, putter, VROOM". Engine jumps to life. 20 yrs of sitting and she purrs better than a kitten.

so yea basically got her started and out of garage because garage is collapsing, surprisingly everywhere but where cutlas is sitting, as if my father was holding that portion of garage together for me.

only things bad on car is front grill cracked, both sides and bumper bent a little, and light surface rust on trunk.
Also car olny has 68xxx original miles

I hope to gain all the knowledge i can from u guys, and be accepted as a cutlass owner.

here are some pics for ya

Welcome. Looks like a beaut.
You will have no problem trading
the Chevy rallys for some Olds rallys.

Welcome to CO! looks like you have a very solid unit. Agree with previous post that the Cheby wheels need to go, SS 1 or 2's would like nicer!
FYI your outside rearview mirrors are non O.E.
Not being critical, it is your car, do with it what you want.

Very nice car , and given the info on what state the garage was in , I'm surprised the car is in such good shape ! I would not run that car if there is real old gas in the tank . If the gas IS real old , and in bad shape , you may want to possibly drop the tank . All I know is running 20yr old gas in the car can cause problems .... maybe someone can give some advice on what to do about the old gas if that's the case .

Nice car and really glad to see you are bringing it back to life. Will be a very gratifying feeling knowing it was your father's pride & joy.

Looks like its in great shape, please keep us posted on your progress and post as many pics as possible!

My father died in 2002 after suffering a heart attack in puerto rico. He was burried there and I never was able to fly and see his grave there, so the cutlass is my reminder of him.

Being burried in puerto rico was his wish.

first i wanna give it a tune-up, maybe get a 4 barrel carb, do some more dress ups to the engine, put it in shows, and i wanna take it to blue rocks family campgrounds in the poconoe mountains. they have a bunch of classics up there. also reason for taking it up there is to get engine a good roadtrip.

and what do u mean by options?

I just moved to Somerton. I grew up in Lawncrest

You could try Craigslist for Olds parts. Haven't seen any SS1's on there but SS2's pop up all the time, but they need work usually

yea do u have any idea as to how much these chevy wheels would be worth?

yea i was looking at reproduction SS1's but they want like $800 a set.
are reproductions better than originals? i mean like quality standards

There's a guy selling SS1's right now on the fourm. He has 5 of them. The difference in repos would be more options, like different sizes and bolt patterns.

The Chevy Ralleys you have now, without tires, you could probably put on CL for about $200 to $500, pending on the stamping inside the rim, but I would wait until March to sell them. Right now it's toys and stuff that will go quick

yea good point, im not in a hurry to get rid of them, as this was and still is my dad's car, and he probably put them on the car because they have a lil more classy look instead of sporty

and what does the stamping inside the rim mean? Can i see it with tire on?

well was looking in trunk, and found 2 oldsmobile mirrors, not sure if they are correct but look to be right. Now to learn how to switch mirrors.

FYI on the rims

A lot of the older SS1 and SS2 rims are 14" which limits tires sizes, some of the ss1 and ss2s are 15" which opens up a lot of tires sizes. new repops can be had in many sizes (ss1)

car looks good for long storage like that...sorry about your dad

Sometimes yes, but most of the time no.

The stamping is usually "inside" the rim, meaning inside the tire. You'll have to remove the tire to see the stamping

Rocket. Looks like a deal with the tires no doubt.
Nice score. Did you get it going?
I don't know about others, but I siphon all the old gas
I can get out of the tank and load up about 15 gals
of Super and shake the car at the rear, side to side
then go for it. Only once did I have to blow back through
the lines to get the fuel to pick up.

Guess I should have gone back and reread the first post. Duh.

Sorry about the wheel deal. I have a really nice set of 14" SS II's with Goodyear Eagle ST's that I am going to steel really nice trim rings bezels and caps. They are Matador Red. II's want 400 .oo for the set but you are in Pa and I am in NC. Freight would probably be outrageous.. Good luck on your search.
