Hello from Idaho

Hello,
My name is Brion and I......am an Oldsmobile fan. Actually, I am a fan of all things with engines, but simply have a soft spot for the Olds. I have a 66 cutlass which I have spent a few hours working on over the years. By the time I got my hands on it, it was no where near stock. Since it was nothing too special (just a regular ol 2 door hardtop) I decided to make it mine - this seems to be an everlasting endeavor but at least it is fun. It currently has a 330 engine that runs ok with a TH400 trans. I am working on pulling together money to put a 455 together for it - nothing serious as I drive this car quite a bit if the roads are clear, I just have an addiction to torque that the 330 struggles to meet. Most of my work to date has been with the body/paint and just keeping up on maintenance so it is safe to drive. I wanted a "clean" appearance so I removed some trim, filled some holes, spent a fair amount of time getting it straight, then had it painted. The car is not perfect, nor does it need to be - no trailers for this baby unless she's broke down beyond the limits of a roadside repair! I joined the forum to network with other Olds owners and hopefully find leads on some of the parts I have had trouble obtaining.

Welcome, the 455 will meet your addiction for torque with no problem. After I got mine put together it became right foot therapy.

comments from Brion

A month or so ago I purchased a 1968 Delmont 88 with a 455 and TH400 with 98,000 miles on it. I planned on using the Delmont as a donor car for the engine and trans but I am struggling with dismantling the car as it is still in pretty good shape and I hate to see very usable cars dismantled rather than restored. I have a picture of the cutlass if you check my profile - I will add more as time permits. I will try to get the pic at the end of my posts, but am new to the forum world and still figuring things out :-) I have considered restoring the Delmont due to the condition, but funds are limited as I am also in the process of restoring a car for my wife - that one is an old Ford.....I know - not an olds, but I did say that I like all things that go vroom and that car sure does it.

Thank you for all the welcomes - hopefully some good old fashioned fuel induced friendships can be formed.

Thank you spiderjason - right back atcha on the car comment.
I must admit - I actually joined the site back in 2007 while i was still doing body work on the car. I was trying to find a vendor for window sweeps for the wide door molding option (B-85 option I think; one of the few trim options I left on the car). After puchasing a few kits that would supposedly fit, only to find that they did not fit, I gave up and epoxied generic window sweeps to the molding. They work for now, but are a little too thick. This poses no problems for the front windows but I disabled the quarter windows (electric) to prevent the chrome edge trim from being scraped up due to the VERY minimal clearance. Once I find a vendor for these I will be stripping the "bandage" off and installing appropriate pieces. I just wanted to drive the car and I didn't want the doors full of junk so I did what I had to do, and could do at the time, to get it put together.

Now that I have a little more time (not much, but a little) I wanted to come back and be a contributing member to the forum and hopefully find some folks with aligned interests. Hence the recent proper introduction.

Welcome Back

Nice ride, once you install the 455 you will have an everlasting grin on you face. Torque has that effect on a person

The B85 molding is something that I have on my 72 also. Right now one of our members '70Post' - Patton Glade is working on finding a supplier that has decent belt molding substrata. I know that Fusicks has them for 70's and 80's model cars. IIRC Patton was also checking with Steele Rubber parts. It sounded like there were a couple of options there.

BTW, I was looking at your 'full size' pic. Very nice bodywork/paint you did there. What is that color? Looks kind of like a light metallic black cherry.

I am in the Pocatello area.

The car is black with stripes that go front to back (over the roof). "Light metallic black cherry" sounds like a pretty accurate description. It is no color with a particular name, that is me spending a few hours (quite a few) with the painter spraying test panels and recording how many grams of this and that and how many coats untill I finally said - "yeah, that's what I am after!".

If the sun is not on it the car will look 100% black. you can't really tell the stripes are even there. When the sun hits the stripes they lighten significantly depending on the angle to a light metallic maroon (a little lighter than black cherry maybe? I picture black cherry as a dark color).

Last time I checked with Steele rubber they had no sweeps for the B-85 option on my year. I am not sure if it was not as popular in the early years and that is why no one is making them or what.

I sure hope someone makes them and we can figure out who they are. I like the look of that trim.
