Just purchased a 1957 98 Convertible I saw parked by the side of the road a couple of weeks ago. I am a recently retired surgeon and nearly done with a 1955 Chevy Nomad restomod. I can already tell that this is going to be a much more challenging job....have learned much already from this forum. Looking forward to picking your brains.

Welcome, the '57 is a favorite of mine.

 

Was rescued from a snow filled field in Maine in 1987 and underwent a body on restoration at that time from what I can tell from some of the pictures that the late owner's wife gave to me. It's mostly complete, not the original bench seats for example. Does not have the original engine but it is a 371 from what I have been able to tell so far. It's pretty crusty and has some rust issues in the doors and body mounts but looks good in these pictures!!!

Welcome. The 57 is one of my favorites. I agree on the continental kit but that is just a matter of preference. Pictures can really be deceiving since these pictures do not match your description at all. Restoring Oldsmobiles, especially 50's models is a lot different that Chevies. Very few parts are reproduced. Fusick's makes lot's of parts but no sheet metal and very little trim. I suggest staring a thread when you get into rebuilding the car. This is a great website and lots of knowledge with people willing to help.

Yes, the pictures are deceiving. Under all that make up lie many evils,
like a beautiful woman with VD.....but you didn't expect me to show all the bad stuff in my first post!
The sad part is that in a few years, after I get done, I will take a picture and it will look about the same. But it will be fun and I will have learned a lot.

 

You won't be picking through my brains. I'm still using what little I have. And a sunny welcome to you. Don't forget to wear a hat when racing about town!

 

That is a sweet dream! One I have had myself. I don't know what evils lie underneath but what I see makes me want to date that lady!

As far as the engine not matching the car there are no matching numbers on fifties era Oldsmobile's, that didn't happen till the mid sixties so a numbers matching 57 doesn't really exist.

Post a few shots of your problem ares and perhaps we can ease your worries, many of us have been there before....... Tedd

 

Beautiful car. I love the lines and all the chrome, still to this day I like the offerings of the BOP group vs the Chevy's.

This is a beauty barge. I love the tri-5s, particularly BOP. Whens the last time you saw one of these at a cruz or show? Is this a J-2, 371? That would be a bonus. Jetaway or Stick?
I have a production total of 8,278, Starfire 98 verts for 1957. Not sure on the "Golden" total as the books not with me. 2-2500 or so if memory serves me spread out from mid 57-58 spread between the 88 & 98 models. Anyway as long as shes not rusty n crusty a good round of penicillin should get things working again! Pinnacle flagship car for Olds IMO!
