New obviously. I've had a lot of vehicles over the years. Over 40 in fact. But only dealt with olds a few times.
Had a 73 delta 88 for a while. Till it was wrecked.
Had a Chevy truck someone had swapped a 403 into, and d*mn was that thing snappy!
I just picked up a 71 cutlass S (in my avatar).
It's basically a barn find. Because the guy I got it from parked it in a climate controlled garage on jack stands in 1989. I bought it and trailered it home last August.
Hope to get to know this place. And hope to be a valid member.
Yeah, the guy and me were talking about me buying it for almost 2 years before I even seen it. It was his baby, many years ago. Then he started a business, and bought a rental house, etc. it went in the garage for a broken tierod, and just sort of never came out.
It does have surface bubbles around the wheels, one pinky size hole in the pass floor, and some small bondo spots right behind the rear wheels.
All I've done is replace the fuel pump, tierod end, and tires.
Then changed all the fluids and filters.
Took it out for the first real drive just yesterday.
And unfortunately it seems to have spotty oil pressure, and an in consistent knock sound from the engine. Which blows.
But, for what I paid, I did alright lol.
Dude got to know me , decided I was the right guy to carry on with it, and sold it to me for about half what I believe it's worth.
Then loaned me the money to put a lift in my shop, so that I can build it right.
Cool guy and I'm going to do him proud.
Good meeting you. Sounds like a nice transaction for the person you bought it from, Liking the story and looking forward to see how you are progressing. Many good folks here on the site willing to help and teach and lend a hand
Pull the pan now and look at the oil pick up.
The timing gear has likely disintegrated and the chunks are clogging the oil pick up screen. Do it now you might be able to save the engine.
Run a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify pressure. If it shows good intermittent pressure it might not be too late.
I was going to try and get the pan off and check. It runs great, and I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge in it, it just knocks intermittent.
The oil pressure gauge line was bled until all air was gone. And now it's all full of air again, almost like the pump is sucking air somehow.
As soon as I figure out the site a little, I was going to start a build thread on it and start asking questions and stuff there.
I'll post a bunch of pics from how it looked when I found it, all the way till the one above from a few days ago.
Don’t worry about the air in the line, that is typical. Mine has been like that since 1982.
The pressure port is on top of the block, and when the engine stops the oil drains into the pan. That means every time the engine is restarted air will be present in the line.
