Greetings

Hello,
I'm on the last stretch of a ten year restoration of my 68 Cutlass convertible. My last two big items I need help with are.

1. Whenever I turn right or left the car will continue in that direction the steering wheel will not center. I have played with the caster and camber for 3 weeks and can’t get it.

2. Exhaust has a very strong smell almost like raw fuel and spits out black carbon vapor. I rebuilt the engine it has a mild cam, HEI distributer, headers nothing to fancy any help would be great.

One more thing I would like to take my car to a mechanic to go over things any good garage recommendations near Greenwood Indiana would be great.
Thank you
James

Brad,

There's a nut on the top of the steering box that adjusts how hard the steering is. If it's too tight the wheel won't return. I can't tell you exactly how to adjust it, mine was loose and I gave my car to my neighbor who's got a repair shop and asked him to go through the car after I finished it up. That's the only thing he adjusted and in IMO it's a little too tight now but it still returns to center OK.

The fuel smell sounds like a carb issue but I really can't help you with that

James, Welcome to C.O. Nice story on the resto of your car. Mike knows his 68's so what I'm adding is only the tech stuff you could prolly find yourself. this link to the 68 Chassis Service Manual goes through teardown and rebuild, but will also describe what you need to adjust the gearbox. http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/membe..._Section_9.pdf
