Got a motor!

Picked up a 350 for my 84 Cutlass off of CL. Casting # says its a 68-71? motor. It has standard bore and a .010/.010 crank. Fresh valve job on the heads. I need some help identifying the heads, though. I am NOT sure they are the 'correct' heads for this motor. The only #s I can find are these:

550-362 on both heads. With a 118 and 253 on the other, but those #s are far away from the 2 on the exhaust ports. I found a site that said these MIGHT be a set of 57cc 260 cid heads....anyone know for sure? <Never mind. I found it right here on the Wiki site. Thanks.>

It came with a lot of new stuff: oil pump, cam, timing set, etc.

The bottom end was assembled by a bunch of chimps, I think. The thrust bearing was on the #1 main cap and there was no rear main seal installed for crying out loud! I pulled it back down and fixed the mains up. I'll finish the short block this afternoon, and I hope to have the car going down the road next weekend.

One more question: Any one have or know where to get an EGR block off plate?

Thanks,

sb

So......

I know what the heads are, and those are some SMALL valves. Is it worth using them at all? Maybe make some good grunty low end torque?

I have had good luck using small combustion chamber/small valve heads on 360 Mopars (318 -302 casting heads). Would this be a similar case? Those valves are 1.7/1.5....but the motor was bigger and....well, anyone been desperate enough to try this on the OLDS?

Thanks,

sb

I am far from a 260 expert, but the heads are way too small for any power, low end or otherwise. 350 heads are everywhere for pretty cheap, I'd vote for that.

Heads

Picked up some -716 casting heads for $160, rebuilt. The old boy said he had 2 or three more sets, so if anyone is interested....let me know.

I put the shortblock together, but didn't have the fuel pump eccentric yet, so I have not yet put the timing chain on. I may not get the car going until next weekend due to the wait on a few more parts.

No worries. I did sell my truck this week, so I'm motorcycle man everyday until I get the car going. (Rain OR shine!)
