Getting back on my Rocket

Getting back on my Rocket
I recently found this site when looking up some parts for my '68 Hurst/Olds, and immediately saw one person I know irl here, and enjoyed the forums, so decided to sign up.
So, I'd imagine you'd like to know a little about me...
~~dream sequence~~
I purchased my '68 H/O back in the early 90's from my aunt after my uncle passed away. They were the original owners, having purchased the car at Bob Huffman Oldsmobile. The car was daily driven and parked outdoors with all that entails, but the car was 100% correct down to the water pump (except for an Accel Supercoil). It is a no option car with standard steering wheel, since the dealer had ordered the car with the intention of racing it. If the salesman on duty that fateful Sunday night hadn't known he wasn't supposed to sell the car, that it was only on display, that would have been its destiny.
After purchasing the car, I immediately started on the restoration, and research that I and others made presented the possibility that my H/O was the last one produced.
But fate being fickle like it is, I lost my borrowed garage location partway into the restoration, then wife, house, and kids... and the car has sat disassembled in enclosed storage ever since. And I slowly faded from the car scene.
~~wake up~~
Forward to 2011... I've just started pouring the slab for my 50x80 pole barn with radiant heat this month, and that has gotten me thinking again about my ability to again start in on the restoration sometime in the next year. So here I am

Welcome to the site! Thanks for sharing the story of your car. Not many of these cars can be traced back to the original owner, so that's way cool. What part of the country, or maybe even what country are you in? Do you have any pictures you could share of the car? John

It has all 5 original wheels. The car is complete, and matching numbers. Only thing I was missing was my air cleaner and original pie tin, as they were stolen out of a storage place I was renting way back (along with some of my repo parts, and lots of chevy parts and other misc stuff). They didn't take the ram air setup though or any of my other rare parts in there. Thank god my engine and transmission weren't in there! I have since replaced my air cleaner with an original in ok shape, and am considering buying one of the rebops that are available. Many of the parts need restored or replaced though, like my original wood which is cracked beyond repair and my shifter housing that is pretty badly broken with missing pieces. Fortunately that stuff is available in repo parts, and I won't throw out my originals in any case. Restoring my steering wheel to like new condition might end up being one of my biggest headaches since I never see parts for standard wheels to replace the worn out ones.
I do have the original window sticker and dealer H/O window sticker, along with all the registration cards, the original title (I applied for a lost title so I could keep the original), original plates, one original dealer plate frame (anyone have one or more Bob Huffman Olds frames that they are wanting to part with?), and most of the factory hangers and stuff that came with the car when it was new. I also have a drag racing slip from when the car was a week old from Woodburn dragstrip. I didn't find any build sheets during disassembly, though the original headliner is still in place and the gas tank hasn't been dropped yet, so you never know...
Speaking of air cleaners, my original had the info silk screened in white on the outside of it, not a decal like I see at all the shows. Unfortunately I don't think I took a picture of it. Does anyone know more about that (ie have a crystal clear picture that can be used for silk screening on my air cleaner when I restore it, or am I stuck sticking a decal on? I'd hate to have to do the latter since I know it wasn't originally that way.

Cool! Glad to hear we've another member from Oregon on board
In the early-mid 1980's I lived up in the Willamette Valley. I remember drooling over a 1968 Hurst Olds that was in Salem. It had been used as a quarter mile car and the only changes were adding a tunnel ram with dual quad and the hood cut to accommodate it. Could this be the same car? I don't remember now if there was a scoop on the hood or just the air cleaners were sticking through.
Back then I was just paying the bills and didn't have two nickles to rub together. I also remember a 1969 Hurst Olds sinking into the ground back of what used to be the G.I. Joes store. John
