Gas Tank

Greetings folks. I am new to Classic Olds forum and look forward to picking the brains of all the knowledgeable Olds owners and lovers. I have a 1949 88 and a 1967 Delta 88. My question is, does anyone know how I might find a gas tank and sending unit for my '67 Delta 88. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I can't find this tank, would another tank work. Thanks again.

Welcome to the site, just a note we do like pictures. To the best of my knowledge there are no new repros. You have to get one from a donor car used. There are places that can rebuild your sender. Hopefully some of the others that are more familiar with your body style will chime in.

Try www.oldsobsolete.com for the send unit. If they have one, it will be expensive!

All my best.

Is it too far gone to have it cleaned and a liner put in it by a radiator shop?

Be careful some of the liners are not compatible with ethanol fuels. There are some that are.

You might try contacting "Toms Classic" on Ebay, he sells alot of different tanks, made in Taiwan. No phone number, you have to email him through Ebay

Eric, that is the first time I ever heard that. I have a hard time believing that any shop would use one this day and time that was not. I guess the thing to do would be to ask and make sure.

I would think the professional shops would be ok. However some of the old sealers are not compatible on the do it yourself side.

I have a '67 Delta 88. Gas tanks for the full-size Oldsmobiles of that year (and probably lots of other years) are not made new. You'll need to find one from another full-size Olds from that year (Delta 88, Delmont 88, or 98). Other years may fit as well. I don't know.

Sending units are also not made for these cars. They use the canister style with the hockey-puck float inside. I needed one for my '67, and I found that the sender for a '72 Delta 88 or Buick Le Sabre, which IS made new, is a drop-in replacement. It doesn't have the baffling that the canister style provides, so the gauge needle will wave around a bit as you go around corners or over bumps, but it does tell you how much gas is in the car, which is a whole lot better than no gauge at all.

Part number FG106A at rockauto.com, which is where I purchased mine. You can probably get it from other sources, including your local auto parts store, which will likely have to order it.

If your car does not have air-conditioning, as mine doesn't, you won't need the second line. Just cap it.

$48.79 plus shipping for the Spectra-Premium model at rockauto.

Of course, this sending unit is only a drop-in replacement if the tank it's mounted on is the original style. If you adapt an aftermarket tank or a tank from another car with the sending unit mounting location in a different place, then this sender likely won't work.

The reason the old sealers won't work on todays gas is because they were shellac based. Shellac is thinned with alcohol. They now use a epoxy based material....Tedd

Good luck. Remember, the FG106A unit is only a drop-in replacement if the tank you're dropping it into is an original '67 full-size Olds gas tank. It may very well work on other tanks, but that has to be checked.
