First-timer newbie seek info on 71 SX...
Good morning to all and thank you for allowing me access to this site.
I am in hopes that someone may be able to help me out. I recently acquired a 1971 Cutlass Supreme 2 door that has the "SX" emblem on the front fender. Looking at the VIN, it show a "Z" in the middle of the numbers just before the amount produced. Does this verify that it is in deed an SX? The person I got it from pretty much stripped it out, but ironically enough I happen to have almost all of the "fancy" items to replace it with. It is not my intention to pawn this off as all original, but I am hoping to make a fairly decent daily driver out of it and put these parts to use. It does have the cut out rear bumper, the rear seat (front buckets gone) is partial vinal and fabric. I happen to have the bucket seats, console, dual gate shifter, 8 track, sport steering wheel, air conditioning setup, super stock wheels, ram air hood and a 425 V-8 and trans with about 45,000 miles on it to replace what was removed. I just thought it was a plain Cutass Supreme and hated to see it get crushed so I though I could save it, but I have been finding more things "left" on it that raises questions. Now if I could only find the sheet metal to repair around the LH wheel opening area without paying an arm and a leg and I will be set!
Many, many thanks in advance for any/all help. Thank you again!

Unfortunately the VIN does not confirm it's authenticity unless the numbers matching block is there but there are ways to tell.
Look inside the fender behind the wheel well, there should be a 1" thick brace that runs down to the lower part of the firewall and up to the front of the hood hinge, these only came on 455 cars (SX and 442).
There should be a 4 core rad support top plate, 455 engine frame mounts and badging.
That's about it...
You could pay $25 on www.SX455.com to get more info I believe but from my understanding unless you can find the build sheet there's not much to go off of.
I have an SX myself and it's missing the driveline and the drivers fender was replaced.
The only way I can tell is from above and the original paint being there around the SX badge on the passengers side.
Otherwise it's just a Supreme to everyone else.
