Finally Found One

I finally found the one and took my wife and son on a whirlwind trip several hours from my home to buy my car. Its a 1972 Olds Cutlass Supreme. It needs work but it is solid and runs and drives very well. I drove it from Dorr, MI 127 mi to *******, MI to store at my brother in laws until winter ends as I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The only hickup was in my excitement I forgot to ask if the heater worked, it wouldnt have changed my mind about buying it but I would have been more prepared to drive it in 10ish degree temps. I am excited and already looking for things to fix some of the issues the car has such as consistent brake lights and turn signals. I hate winter...

That's not a Supreme. Nice car, good luck.

Nice find. Except for the rims, looks to be good start to a restoration. The interior seems to be in great condition. Was it recently painted? That must have been a really cold first ride, luckily you did not run into a freak snow squall or shower.

Nice looking car, you're going to have a great time with it! Like Kennybill mentioned, it's not a Supreme but it has the "S" trim level on it...the S doesn't stand for Supreme (I made that mistake when I got my first Olds).

Have you verified the VIN or cowl tag for model year? The car looks to have 1971 Cutlass S grills and headlight bezels...the '72 would have a different grill style and the bezels would be painted flat black.

Yeah the S threw me. This is my first cutlass so I have a lot to learn. The wheels are gonna go as soon as I can get new ones. I like the 15x8 and 15x10 staggered setup for these cars. I just need to find some rims that have the look I am after. I think the previous owner resources parts from a couple different cars. The paint has nicks chips and scratches. The car itself and floors are very solid which is what caught my eye.

Welcome, nice Cutlass. Is the engine original? Looks to be painted a shade of corporate blue used on 75-77 GM cars.

The car looks great. Put some dryer sheets in or around it to help prevent mice. I put a couple sticky traps around mine and caught a mouse. They can mess things up quick.

It is a late 70s 403 with the Edelbrock carb, intake and cam. It doesnt have any other modifications to it as far as the previous owner knew. It doesnt have a ton of power but it felt pretty strong. It has a th350 and open rear with the highway gearing. It drove really nice on the highway up 131 at 70 miles an hour but I think some steeper gears are in order. Once I have it home it will only see weekends from May thru the end of September.

I put dryer sheets in my camper for the winter and it seems to work well I will definitely be doing that in the car.

The 403 is much maligned but they have potential. Some guys are running pretty quick with them.

Yeah I am just looking for a fun weekend cruiser. I think the 403 will serve fine for what I am doing with it.

I love 403s even though a lot of Oldsmobile people don't. In stock form they'll run forever. I put one together just with mis-matched parts and in a $200 white Regal it ran 12.96 @ 105.xx mph. I had it at the Miller meet about 15 years ago. It had small valved #5 heads. People would ask me about the engine while looking under the hood. I'd tell them, I got the engine out of a taxi in the junkyard.

Not in my car! Mice pulled the dryer sheets out of a trash can near the car and made a nest in my air cleaner. I lost all faith in in that method. The picture seen shows the nest at the edge of the air cleaner but when I discovered it it was deeper inside. I pulled it out some to get a picture.... Tedd

The flat sticky traps work if they step in it. I put one on either side inside the garage door and some under the car. Got one right at the door. The traps I bought are about 3 by 6 inches. A guy at work said he took a five gallon bucket with 5 inches of water in it. A stiff wire stretched across it through a can. Coated the can with peanut butter. A board ramp for them to walk up. They cross the wire and step onto the can. The can spins and they fall in the water. Now that's an industrial strength mouse trap.

I will get the sticky traps. I liked the dryer sheets but that looks pretty conclusive they dont work.

I think the sheets loose their smell and maybe the smell is what they don't like. IF you put the sticky traps in the car make sure they are placed on top of large paper or towels in case the mouse flips it over and ruins your carpet or seats.

I've heard that it's not dryer sheets but cayenne pepper that keeps the mice away.
