Question Engine ID help

Hello all, I am not an oldsmoblie owner. I am a retired Los Angeles County Firefighter. I do have a question. I just bought an old 1932 ford roadster and I would like to confirm what engine is in it. First it is an Oldmobile. It has a Muncey M 20 4 speed trans. Near the number 7 cylinder it is stamped R239123. The heads are casting number 16. The manifold casting number is 571145. It appears to to me to be a 56 block with a J 2 top end. Is this possible? Will the J2 top end fit and work on this block. It definately appears to have been used quite a bit. Maybe I have everything wrong also. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Red face Check a bit more

#16 heads should be 1957. The 571145 intake manifold should be a J-2 from 1957 or 1958. From 1956 to 1957 the stroke and deck height changed so mixing these parts results in mismatched ports. You can look at the rear of the engine, passenger side, bellhousing area for a cast number. 568922 should be for 1954-1956.

Thanks for your response! The casting number on the bellhousing is 561747. R239123 is stamped on the block deck just below the head between number 5 & 7 cylinder. Hope this helps. Regards, Jim

Post Block needs a bit more research

I'm still drawing a blank on the block. While not guaranteed for an exact year, bore & stroke might narrow the search if they haven't been altered. Here's another site which often has some information on the stage 1 Olds engines: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/
