Eggshell? Satin? or Matt?
Eggshell? Satin? or Matt?
i don't know how to go about this. I already bough a paint made by Advantage (701 Hotrod Black) its a high performance Urethane Single stage paint. I read the data sheet for this product and it says that i can reapply additional coat of paint or a clear coat but the only instructions it gives for a clear or an additional coat is to, lightly sand before reapplying. i understand this far
I just bout a flattening agent from Transtar (6494 Urethane Flattening agent)
ok i understand the mixing ratios very well but my question is
if i already have a flattening what kind of clear do i buy? a flat clear? or will that be redundant
oh and what are your guys opinions on a vinyl top because really want one but don't know what finish the car should have if Eggshell or Matt or a satin
help me out!
Welcome aboard.
As I understand your question you didn't buy a base coat/clear coat system you bought a single stage urethane, you wouldn't clear coat a single coat system unless I am mistaken. Flatting agent would be used in the finish coat of urethane if you were looking for a flatter type finish( it also degrades the finish the more you add). I'm not clear what you are asking as far as sheen for the vinyl top you may need to explain this a little better, sheen is a personal taste thing...Tedd

I'm painting my car right now, too, so I can understand your questions.
From the instructions in the link you provided:
RECOATING:
2.8 VOC #700 Urethane Single Stage Color may be recoated after 16-24 hours at 77° F. After 16-24 hours it must be lightly sanded/scuffed before additional color or clearcoat may be applied.
it looks like there is no problem in applying a clearcoat according to that last sentence.
I found the same thing from the paint supplier I used. I didn't get a urethane paint, but their website says the same thing. The urethane doesn't need a clearcoat, but there is no harm in putting one on.
Here is their clearcoat for urethanes:

They also make a base coat/clearcoat kit:

By the way, and this may mean nothing as I am not an expert, or even an intermediate, just a novice, but I've never heard of different types of clearcoats in terms of "satin," "matte," "flat, "or "eggshell" the way there is in house paint. I've just seen "clearcoat," period. The supplier I use doesn't mention more than one type.

Alfa, most "hot rod black" paints that I've seen, are already flat or matte. Double check on that before you move forward. If not, then yes, you need to add it. Usually different percentages for different gloss levels. Just be careful spraying a finish such as that. Over application, or uneven spray such as overlap, will give you an inconsistent finish.

@ent72olds thank you so very much I just needed to get some reassurance of what I was doing. I had done a test pray earlier this week and it wasn't as flat as I wanted it. But I just learned that I need to apply 3 coats and 2 of them need to be wet with a flash time of 15-30min. Thanks for the advice
