Craigslist and finding the car you want
Craigslist and finding the car you want
I've scoured Craiglist for the past three months looking for a solid 1970 notchback Cutlass. Is it just me, or do people try to get $10-15,000 for a fixer upper normally? I feel like they value their project car like it's completely restored. Or are they possibly trying to get one of us newbie suckers to pay out?
On another quick note, I'm looking to get a 1970 notchback with a 350, bucket seats, and automatic on the console. For some reason, they seem very hard to find in project cars. Anyone know why that is?

I'm not sure where you are, but this one in Tampa looks good for $6500: http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/4160688967.html
I'm sure you are aware that the 68-72 Cutlasses are very popular right now with the donk crowd, and that has driven prices up.

Yeah, thanks.
I think I am slowly learning that most people that have these cars don't sell them.
I'm about 25% saved up for paying 100% cash for a project car. So, I have a while before I can actually do anything and get a car parked in the garage to work on.
Is there another avenue other than Craigslist that people on here use? I have seen that several people will post in the Cars for Sale forum to help each other out.

Might save money in the long run buying one that is already done....

Or, go the 455 route - this looks like it could be a rare car, better move quick...

Good Luck.

On this one I think the seller may be incorrect on factory 455 or maybe the guy thinks his 350 is a 455.
I could be missing it but I don't see SX emblems & all SX's got the cut out rear bumper.

It also has the Cutlass S grills and hood.
Still looks nice though.
You have seen Pawn Start and Kounting cars, right?
You show up look it over, pick at the flaws and moan bout your expenses then offer 30% of asking, then barter to 40-60% of asking price. Or, walk away. Never be afraid to walk away.

Some people buy cars for stupid money. Therefore, some people ask stupid money for theirs, hoping that someone will come along and pay stupid money. A guy in my area was asking $7500 for a "very rare" 68 4 door Cutlass, complete with virtually no paint, rust and a worn out interior.
To the original poster there is one listed in Chicago for $4500 no buckets if memory serves.
Also they posted it here member name samanthaanddan.

I had a 1970 Cutlass listed on this site a short while back for forty-three hundred or best offer. I am not saying it was the best deal going, but I was open to offers. And it was a good, solid, running / driving project car. I have since started parting it out. Wow! what a waste.
I bought the car off Craigslist and the trick to getting it was; I had cash money in my pocket and I was ready, and willing to go buy it. I wound up getting it for sixty percent of the asking price.
Another recent find was an all original 1971 Cutlass S I found locally. It was a lot rougher, but the price was also a lot easier on my pocket book. It too was a running, driving car. All it needed were tires and it could have been used as a dailey driver. But IMO it wasn't a good candidate for restoration due to the rust, both visible and hidden, which I found when I started disassembling it. I paid fifty percent of the asking price for it.
Deals are out there, you just need to be ready to jump when they appear.
I also believe it is better, and far less expensive, to buy a car that is already finished as opposed to buying and fixing one up.

I've bought dozens of Oldsmobiles over the years. I never nitpick or point out faults. I ask how much they need for car/engine/whatever I'm looking at. After I hear the price, I tell them "it's worth the price but unfortunately I don't have that much money. Talk a little more, usually they'll ask how much I have. I'll tell, I don't want to insult you. They finally "pry" my number out of me.Pretty low. Usually they'll counter lower, sometimes I have to refrain from buying. I will say, maybe I can borrow X amount from (fill in a name). More than not they take the offer. If not I can always take their last lowest price. Cash does talk. Ken

Yeah, I plan on having a minimum of about $4,000 in my pocket before I try to make anyone any type of offer. I'm willing to drive and haul however far I need to get a good deal on the exact type of car I want (although, cross country might not be worth it). Cash does talk. I learned that from watching Fast N Loud.
I would say over 50% of craigslist sellers selling old cars are uninformed. They are the ones that see the televised auctions and think they're junk is worth gold. If you find one that is way over priced and close to you. I would still go look at it. I have done this several times. I will go with NO intentions of buying it because of the price. After looking at it tell them you would have to pass but if they don't have any luck selling it (and they won't) and want to come down on the price to give you a call. I have had people call me before i even get home and also people call me a year or two later that they are tired of looking at it and to make an offer.

But be aware, the offer you leave them with will be used against you. It'll be the first thing they tell the next guy when the negotiations began. I was just lucky.
And being nice, not pointing out each flaw, and just hanging out and talking for awhile sure does help.

On the picture I see (?) a left pipe sticking out but can't tell from the angle on the right.
