Welcome and yes, it's a Supreme, since all 1972 Cutlass convertibles were Supremes. And before someone posts about the 1972 442 convertibles, since the 442 package was an option that year, not a separate model, those were Supremes also in 1972.

hey buddie use por 15 for surface rust after you 80 grit the majors out. 2try to use spot panels after you remove all rust well into new metal and then treat it thouroughly for further rusting purposes. 3. pound out dents and use as little bondo as possible and use a shrinking hammer. 4 let the bondo set up till slightly cool then use a very long block when needed 80 to 180 or 220 grit it saves major time and sand paper also costs. then prime with good primer finish sand 400 to 600 wet depending on color. by the way let the primer dry at least when warm 1 to 2 days so the solvent can evaporate out and sand flatter. all sorounding areas for adhesion should be 320 da flat no gouging either for the primer.

Looks like a nice project car. What are your plans for it? Color etc... Looks like the body shop removed the body side moldings and mounting tabs.
Can you post the VIN (it will start 3J67K2......) This is a code that breaks down to
3- Oldsmobile
J - Cutlass Supreme
67 - convertible
K - L34 350 4bbl engine (std engine for CS in 72)
2 - model year 1972
* - letter will indicate what factory built it
123456 - 6 digits indicate the build sequence at that factory.
and pic of the cowl tag? Would be interested to see what info they provide.

Allan, I never knew you could break it down like that. It makes me curious to get home to check my title out to see what mine actually is. I was told it was an S, but I don't really know. Thanks for the information.

3 - Oldsmobile
36 - V8 Engine equipped
87 - body style - holiday coupe
0 - 1970 model year
* - letter for production plant
123456 - build sequence at production plant.
If your car was born as a 442 though the VIN would start out like this: 344870*123456. In 1970 442 was it's own model and was designated as 4400 series, the 87 would be fastback, 57 was the CS hardtop and 67 was the CS vert. This info should all be copied over to your thread.
There's other info on the cowl tag that may provide even more interesting tidbits about your car.
The VIN for 1972 was a changeover year from previous models.

Hey Allan, my car's VIN is what you stated 336870E and the sequence number. Does this mean it is a S, meaning Sport Holiday Coupe or Supreme? I am confused while searching for this answer on the web. A lot of the pictures look similar.
I am adding additional pictures now if you do not mind checking it out. Please let me know what you think. I am removing the stripes completely and getting it painted solid black this month.

Dee, you VIN translates like this
3 - Oldsmobile division of GM
J - Cutlass Supreme
67 - Convertible
K - 350 4bbl engine (std for 72 CS BTW)
2 - 1972 model production
M - Lansing Michigan production (this means you will see LAN in the cowl tag)
144523 - build sequence at Lansing (not related to body number on cowl)
From the looks of this VIN I'd guess your car was built some time in Oct of 1971 for the 1972 model year. The in service delivery date confirms the 'sell' date, but it could have sat on a lot for a while before Alice bought it. We'll find out when you post the cowl tag.
