best ways to ID sx`s

New to the forum but have read several posts on figuring out if a car is a true sx or not. I just bought a 1970 cutlass with 455 engine which looks to be original. Is at shop now trying to get it started as it has set for 6 years, car is in good shape however. Checked today and has fender braces. Also trying to get block number to match up. Any help on best ways to ID or find out if it is a true sx will help

please check out 455sx web site. they have everything you should know! I can let you know as much as i. Main thing is the build sheet. only way to know for sure is build sheet or original window sticker.

I suppose the best way to properly authenticate an SX is with the original build sheet, they were done between '70 to '71. If the build sheet is unavailable, the next best route would be the vin stamping located on the upper forward drivers side of the block on a boss located just below the head. It is a little awkward to see, and a good flashlight and a mirror will help. If the last digits on the block coincide with the last digits on the vin number, chances are likely that it came with SX badges save for a clever restamp. On hardtops the fenders will have the braces, but the trailing arm braces typically did not come on SX's. The engine should have relieved valve covers for the brake booster and AC box. All that I've seen have had a four row radiator with the proper radiator top plate. It will also have true dual exhaust with W/Z manifolds as well as a notched 442 style rear bumper. The SX cars were equipped in full dress as well as fairly sparsely. Some have lots of power accessories, disk brakes, rallye pack, floor shift, buckets, and then again some have bench seat, drum brakes all around, no power accessories, and mundane color combinations to contribute to the effect. I'm sure that I may be missing some other details, but this info should help you get started with authentication. Good luck!!

Sebagoman, please post photo's of your car and include detailed photos of the hood hinges where they bolt to the fenders. Also include photos of the Cutlass SX script if it has it. I know it can be a little difficult to post pictures on this site but you can e-mail to me at m442convert@gmail.com

Oh did not know that was your car since some else posted pictures. That definately is NOT an SX, SX's will be a supreme notch back body style. But if your car was ordered from the factory with a 455 it will be an L -33 2bbl motor. Send pictures of both fender braces.. as they will be mounted different from one side to the other. One side should be like a nut type mount while the other is a bolt type mount if it is factory.

it appears to have fender braces, are they built into the fenderand bolted on below, that what it appears to be. I will take some pics. We were wondering if it may be Cutlass s with an ordered 455 which is rare as I understand it. I also own a 1970 Cutlass Supreme with a 350 rocket and a 1971 monte. My boy posted the pics (he owns a 70 monte ) we bought for $ 8000 with 500 worh of parts and an extra 400 tranny, hardly a spot of a rust anywhere and runs great, it had been sitting in his garage for 6 years and needed cleaning but looks to be a good buy either way----------Jeff
