I'm new to the site, and glad to be here. I have a 1969 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Convertible. I've had it for 6 years and have re-done the engine compartment, paint, bumpers etc. I ran into a bit of bad luck about 3 months ago. I was in my local town parade when the fuel line to the carb let go. Big time engine fire . Stopped at the firewall, but all the plastic, rubber, wire parts burned up. Not to mention my paint on the hood and fenders. This is not an easy car to find parts for. I really need the plastic inner fender wells(wheel houses),wiper and radiator bottles,wiper motor. Any leeds would would be great. Thanks.

Did you find out WHY the fuel line came off? Was it metal or rubber?

I'm from the Cleveland Ohio area. The fuel line to the carberator was rubber- will certainly change that on the new build. I did get a leed on a salvage place- Leon's in Culpeper VA. Anyone been there?

 

Also,

Has anyone dealt with the salvage title issue? The insurance company wants to total the car and have me buy it back with that type of title. Pros - cons ?

I was in my first parade this weekend...had dreams the same would happen so I packed a
huge Fire ext. in my back seat. This group will help you all they can..great group.
Hit the computer and search out all national distributors, then go local.
Have you been to any car shows, always good connections. Contact the local oldsmobile club and hit the swap meets. Hang in there you'll find your parts. Good luck

 

First it depends on your state. Are you allowed to have a salavged car in Ohio? Salvage title does bring the value of the car down a bit, but I would document EVERYTHING. Receipts for parts, pics of the car before the fire, right after the fire, and during the rebuild process. You know the frame isn't bent because it's not like you hit something.

My current Delta has a salvage title. It has a salvage title because the engine was blown and it was supposed to be hauled off to a junkyard, However the guy I bought it off of bought the car, replaced the engine and all is well. I did find out that my nose was replaced because there are chips of red showing thur by the hood. Both fenders are fine and orginal paint (becasue the clear is comming off) and you can tell the car is straight.

Your insurance company sounds cool giving you the option. It sounds like they would sell the car AS IS to somebody else to recoupe some of the money lost in paying you out

And you're right, no structrural damage. I can't imagine that it will detract from the value that much - it's not a 442 with matching numbers - it's just a nice clean driver's car.

 

Does anyone know if a 69 or 70 Olds 98 has plastic inner fenders (wheel houses) ?

Tommy have you done anything with the insurance company yet? If not, absolutely do not give them the title. It's your car and you pay the premium for the insurance.

Let's see, you put in a claim, they pay the claim. Then you give them the title and they sell it back to you, which means you give them the money they just gave you. PLUS you have a branded title that could cause grief down the road. It doesn't cost them anything and you're screwed. Twice.
