New here been reading some of the swaps people have done and just inherited my 84 cutlass. It was a project my step dad was working on before he got sick. The car was originally a v6 automatic not sure what transmission was in it. He pulled all that out and put a 350 rocket in it. Not sure what transmission is in it or how to find out. The car runs but the trans isn’t hooked up. The crossmember seems to be in the wrong place for the trans in it now and the original drive shaft it to long. I’d really love to finish up his project in his honor and continue the war he was going with the olds motor and trans. I believe the motor is a mid 70s model any help on how to figure out what trans is in it and how to get the crossmember in the right spot for it would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails I may go to a sbc swap but I’d rather continue how he started as this was his last project he was working on and really loved this car

I would love to do an LS swap. I was actually talking about it earlier with my wife. When I started talking prices I kinda got that “look”. So I figured I’d keep it on the path it was on for now lol.

 

Welcome to the site. The transmission pan can tell you what you have to a certain extent.

 

V6 came with 3 speed THM-200. Not the strongest
7.5" rear end with Final drive ratio std: 2.41 optional 3.08 3.23

 

Go Olds 350 and Th350 trans, fit right in. Would go great if the rear end is the optional 3.08 3.23

 

I would suggest 455 with a modified 200R4...

 

If 350 is good I'd stick with it since you already have it but x2 on a properly built 200-4R. Get a 3.73 rear from an 83-88 Hurst, 442, GN or Monte SS. Fun factor will increase exponentially!

I think the LS swap is highly overrated. The engine is the easy part. Getting it to run is another animal entirely, with all the electronic bs required. But the TV shows never mention that...

 

Go to looking today and it is an 86 not 84. No big deal to me. It has a 350rocket motor and it runs decent I believe it’s a th400 trans. But it don’t match up to the crossmember at all and the drive shaft is way off. I assume my best option is to get rid of that transmission and go for a th350. Only problem is I can not seem to find an olds th350 any where. I do have a sbc 350 motor that is freshly rebuilt and has a few mods done to it that I could throw in it and I can find a Chevy 350 trans all day around where I live. I’d like to keep the olds motor and all but I can’t find anything for olds around me

 

Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Cadillac share transmission bell bolt pattern. There are also TH350 and 200 that have universal bolt pattern, fits BOPC and Chevy. Shouldn't be too hard to find a core.

But it sounds to me like you want that SBC in it...

 

Tell us where you are. A Member here, close to you, may have a 350 turbo. Have a little patience some body will tell you how to make the 400 work. Go on the gbody forum. I am sure the 400 and olds has already been done

 

I’m in Chattanooga. If anyone close has a good th350 trans is definitely be interested in buying one. I really would like to keep the olds motor in it.

 

G bodys have two sets of mounting points for the transmission crossmember. One for TH350 and th2004R than I know for sure. Need to beef up the frame and body. Or a high HP and Torque engine will twist the whole car. Here is a few thing I did.
