72 Olds Cutlass emergency brake doesn't work
My emergency brake doesn't work and I don't know where to start with this. When I press the break I don't feel any tension and the pedal just goes down. Any advice will help. Thank you.

The e brake uses the rear brakes. The rear brakes are connected to the parking brake pedal by a cable. The cable needs to be reasonably tight to work. there are 3 hooks that hold the cable. You need to crawl under the car and look at the cable. Either it's missing the hooks, the cable is missing, loose, wrong length...who knows? Crawl under and see if it's there and not flapping around.

First you need to remove the wheels, drums, and inspect the rear brakes. Make sure the cables are attached, the shoes are not worn out, and you have no leaks in the wheel cylinders. Replace worn parts and adjust as required.
Then follow the cables toward the front and make sure they are routed and interconnected properly. Look under the dash at the E-brake assy and make sure the cable is connected to the mechanism correctly. Go back to the adjuster under the car and adjust so the E-brake pedal engages the rear brakes at about 1/3 of the way down to the floor from its fully released position.
