Blower motor doesn't work on HI

Hello, my blower motor works, but not on HI speed. Could someone explain this to me?

I did some searching on this problem and found a few posts:

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...wer-motor.html

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-resistor.html

Even after reading these posts I am still somewhat confused. Does the blower motor go to HI speed by getting 12V directly from the alternator? A ground near the heater core is mentioned in the posts... How would the blower motor work on lower speeds and not on HI if the ground were bad?

Sorry for my confusion, I was just hoping someone could explain this to me.

Mine didn't work on high and it was the inline fuse on the wire to the motor. The lower fan speeds don't use that wire for power.
I would check that and the high blower relay first if you haven't already.

I no longer own a 1964 Olds. The only Oldsmobiel I own is a 1971 Olds 98 luxury sedan.

Thanks for the info though, I will have to check it out this weekend.

here is your answer

high blower relay on the firewall, or ...

a small in-line fuse on the orange wire going from the dist back to the firewall

between the 3 of mine, the Toro blew the fuse, the 88 blew the fuse (and now has a breaker) the wagon blew the relay (I had a spare from when the Toro went on the way to the 07 Nationals and I bought a relay at a Napa in bumf&^%$ TN but that did not fix it. Someone in line at the Nats knew where it was but did not have the correct fuse (had everything but) but I had a box of em in the glovebox!

Thanks Joe (1st owner)

I love that my 3 are all kind of interchangeable.

I went the resistor route as well when the 88 did not work on 3 (pinched wire in the dash) Got resistor, switches, then re-wired

I love guessing. Not.

You said there is an orange wire going from the distributor to the firewall?

I put an HEI disbributor in my car. It is running off of 12V directly from the fuse block. How does the distributor effect the blower motor?

well there is on my years 75 76, sorry I guessed... but it may have been there before the HEI I think it's there from the late 60s. So, I guess the relay maybe, but mine def has a small 20amp in line fuse just north of the firewall... it actually goes to the relay I believe

just checked on the wagon, looks like it is down there somewhere, feeds the relay, and the wagon wire looks red but has a fuse in it

The 71 98 does not use a hi blower relay power come directly from the blower switch. Tried twice to post the testing directions today from work both times said I was not signed in .Will bring wiring diagram home and try from here tommorrow.

If you want to make a diagram of the wiring to test it heres how to make one. Draw 2 squares on a sheet of paper about 4 inches apart label one fan switch the other fan resistor, draw 3 lines connecting the 2, label these as follows the top line hi, color orange/black the middle one medium , color light blue and the bottom one low , color yellow. Draw another line out the back of the fan switch square label it power it goes to the fuse box, color is brown. Now above the the hi orange/black line draw a circle label it fan, draw a line connecting the circle to the hi orange/black line if you like draw another line off the fan to represent the fan ground it probably connects to the fire wall .When the switch is placed on low and medium power flows thru the blower resistor out the orange/black to the fan, on hi it flows directly to the fan from the switch on the orange.black wire. If you backprobe the switch with a test light with the switch on hi it should light if not the switch is bad. If the test light comes on the wire is probably the problem, you can test the wire by disconnecting the switch connector and jumping power from the brown wire to the orange/black wire and the fan should run on hi . Hope this helps.

Gents, thanks for all of the tips. I got it working this morning. It turned out that I forgot to put the fusible link back onto the 12V terminal in the engine bay when I removed my old distributor. I cleaned the fuse and fuse holder and it works great now!

Glad ya "Got er done"

I'm glad I'm not the only one who ends up forgetting things.

[Like putting back on the flex plate before putting the engine back in,when I yanked the Vista's engine to repaint it. ]

the Toronado has this cool low fuel reminder. It stops when there is no fuel. That was a first!
