72 cutlass s w29 u code 455 from holland
#4
Hello from a fellow '72 U Code W-29 owner. I don't think any of these cars were actually built in Europe. I believe they would have been exported from one of the east coast U.S. plants (Framingham or Linden would make the most sense geographically). Unfortunately, I don't know whether any GM export records survived. One member here, W-Machines, may have some export numbers if anyone does.
Can you post pics of your car or provide more info?
Terry
p.s.: Where are you in Switzerland? I've been to Bern, Zurich and Interlaken. Beautiful country.

So 72 Export U-Code 442's have 442 on the Cowl Tag. It would have been so much easier if they had done that with domestic 72 442's as well. It looks like a Lansing built 442 as well (Is that a cowl tag or the export VIN tag?) If this is the cowl tag it must have been installed in the Lansing plant if the VIN is on it

The M in your VIN indicates a Lansing-built and exported car. In 25 years of owning many of these cars, I have never heard of a European plant actually building these cars during that era. That may have been GM's base of operations at the time, however, and that's where the inner fender tags would have been installed. I'd love to see any articles or info on actual assembly plants if you have that info.
There were 9,845 cars built with the W-29 442 package in 1972. This includes fastback hardtop coupes, sport "post" coupes and convertibles.
2,711 of these W-29 cars had either U Code or V Code 455s. It's really hard to break it down much farther than that with any accuracy.
Some of the 66 V Code convertibles were W-29s, others were not.
A reported 751 V Codes fastback/post coupes were built. Many were W-29 but not all of them.
So the number of U Code W-29 cars is less than 2,711. ; )

Just a little education. What you are calling a build sheet is actually a Fisher body broadcast card. Also, Lansing cars don't contain buildsheets due to the policy of no sheets left in the car
This is a build sheet.
