72 Cutlass axle question

I have a 72 Cutlass long story short I decided to put new seals, bearings and retainers on the axles. Here's the problem... I took them apart a long time ago and now I most be doing something wrong because I have about 1/4" in-&-out play when axle is installed.
Need one of you Olds experts to please point me in the right direction, I can't wait to get back on the road and put the top down. I have attached a pic... I'm wondering if I install the bracket backwards???

I'm a bit rusty at this but here goes...Was the differential removed? If so could be missing shims.

Otherwise, bearings may not be fully pressed on or the wrong size bearings, C clips may need to be installed or if no C clips your plate could be on backwards. I won't be hurt if others chime in with correct answers..

I did have the diff out because I installed new ring and pinion but this are not "C" clip axles, notice the pic with the plate. Bearings and retainers are pressed all the way in as far as they go. Not 100% sure but I don't see how the shims could make a difference?

One more thing I also just installed new brake drum kits that came fully assembled, I wonder if I'm missing a plate behind or something?

Joe I appreciate all the help but maybe because I just got hm and I had a long day at work my brain is tired and I don't get it. If I can get the original bearings I can eliminate this problem but apparently it's nearly impossible to get them. So my option with the taper bearings is to use chims? Where do I get them? I have the correct bearings, seals and retainers as mentioned on the specified link. Thanks for any help that you can provide...

Ed, buy these and do yourself a favor. I didn't need the shims when I used the GM ones I bought! (these fit your car even though it says is for chebbies) Also, use the 712146 seal, not the 2146.

Just bought them! I already have the 712146 seals, hopefully this will fix the issue. Thanks Again! I will update once I get them...
