Hello everyone. I own a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 307 that I have been trying to restore for the past 15 years. I finally got the engine running, but I still have a lot left to do. I’m going to need all the help I can get to proceed with my project. So if anyone has any suggestions please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Looking forward to exchanging ideas with everyone. Thank you.
Welcome. My first question is, did you also replace the distributor when you installed that E-brock carb? Your 307 uses a computer controlled carb and distributor. The advance curve in the distributor is fully controlled by the ECU - there is no conventional vacuum or mechanical advance mechanism. The computer requires a throttle position sensor in the carb to operate properly (along with other sensors like a MAP sensor). By eliminating the original carb, you've forced the ECU into limp-home mode, which defaults to a fixed advance setting in the ignition module. You'll either need to replace that computer controlled distributor with an older version with advance mechanisms or reinstall the original computer controlled carb.
Yes. I replaced the distributor. Do you think I need to replace the computer also?
If you've replaced the distributor and carb with non-computerized versions, you can ignore the computer - it isn't doing anything. You will have to decide how you want to control torque converter lockup and A/C compressor clutch operation, but those are secondary concerns once you get the engine running the way you want it to. Carry on.
Welcome to the group... Good luck with your project... If you should need assistance with parts for your 84 Cutlass, I have a lot of NOS & used parts available,..

Thank you very much joe, I have to let you know after I change the carburetor my transmission will not shift. Any advice?
The trans is not computer controlled (other than converter lockup) so that's not an issue.
How have you connected and adjusted the throttle valve cable with the non-stock carb? In your photos, the TV cable does not appear to be connected.
EDIT: I just read your other thread that says this car has a TH350 swapped into it. First, this is a classic example of why you shouldn't ask the same question in multiple threads. Second, the mind reading isn't working, so unless you tell us EXACTLY what's been done to this car, it's really difficult to provide useful information. Without knowing the actual configuration of the car, we have to assume the trans is original. Obviously a TH350 is not, so ignore what I wrote above. How about we start with a full description of the non-stock parts of this car?
