Did the crank spin free after you installed the mains?
Try pulling all the plugs and turn it over. If it spins well than I would suspect maybe #1 was on exhaust stroke instead of comp stroke. If it is not that, possibly cam to crank alignment (timing gears not aligned properly). If it still spins slow, I would check the rings.

18436572 rotor turns counter clockwise. Yes you must be sure #1 is TDC COMPRESSION stroke. While cranking rotate distributer slowly to see where it fires.

You would be better to fill carb bowl thru the top vent tube on the carb. Too much gas thru the throat is no good and can wash the cylinders....

Did you line up dots on crank gear and cam sprocket? They should have been at 6 and 12.

I know you have checked it many times, but be sure that your plug wires are in Counter Clockwise order from the top of the cap, not from looking inside of it. Olds distributors turn opposite of Chebby's.

I hope you ground the crank .010 and not .10" !!

So, it spins over OK, but does not fire correctly?

I did see one case where it ran briefly then seized, because engine ASSembler did not wash the grinding crud out of the crank's oil passages. That seized tight though, not an easy spin.

Can you get a local expert to come and go over the setting of spark timing with you? It's 99% certainly the problem, and I don't get the feeling you have a deep understanding of how to set that right.

Oh, and THANKS for your service, I don't think we need to be the world's policeman [unless we get paid for it and I don't mean with $4 a gallon regular...] but I still appreciate the folks who sign up for that service!

randy i have been looking on forums for diffrent firing orders they all say the same but if im looking at the cap should num 1 be in front or back of cap because that might be my issue when i do tdc an point the rotor to num 1 an plug everything up it backfires an no start

Standing in front of the car, let's call the firewall 12 o'clock, plug wire number 1 would be at approx 4:30-5:00. Wire #8 is in the next position to the right of that, then the rest 4-3-6-5-7-2.
Good luck!

Picture help

Looking for some help inserting pictures. I tried to get one on on my profile but can't figure out how to do it. Also tried to add an album but there was an error loading. Some areas are asking my for my URL http:// and I don't know what to put.

Some help if you can. Thanks
