1973 Olds Delta 88 Royale Convertible
1973 Olds Delta 88 Royale Convertible
I have a 1973 Olds Delta 88 Royale Convertible, automatic, all power, air, 455 Rocket. Nice condition. I've owned it for about 9 or 10 years. I am looking for a few parts and to sell it.
Coolant spitting out after shut off
I am looking for input on how to resolve a cooling overflow issue with my Olds Delta 88 with 455 Rocket. After driving I shut it off and coolant often spits out of the overflow hose for a few minutes - usually just an 1/8 th of a cup or so. I have owned it for about 9 or 10 years and I didn't have this problem originally. It did not have a coolant surge tank on it when I got it but I have been contemplating getting one but am having problems locating one. Is this spitting normal? What can I do to resolve this?
Thx

First thing is pressure test the radiator cap. It may be getting weak after years of service. Also check to make sure it is a relief type and not a pressure vacuum type (recovery system cap)
If the cap checks out...
Are you completely filling the radiator to the bottom of the cap bib, or are you leaving some room for the coolant to expand as it heats up?
If car was not originally equipped with coolant recovery, you need about a 3" air space between coolant level and top of radiator. Look on the side tank and you should see a "Fill Cold" mark. If you fill a non-recovery system past that point, it is about guaranteed it will puke out coolant until it finds the level it wants.

Hi have a 1974 Delta 88 Royale convertible also. I am looking for a parts catalog to order from. Are there any that are specific to this car that I can purchase. Preferrably not on CD.
I've been looking around the forum and Rocketraider you've helped answer one question already, great advice.

Thanks rocketraider - This weekend I put a new radiator cap cap on it. Also,it looks like there was a surge tank on one mounted on the fender at one point so I put one back in. I've been driving around for a few days now and have had no problems. I'm watching the fluid in the surge tank going up and down and looks to be working fine.
