1971 Delta Royale 88 Convertable

I've tried but can't seem to "decode" this VIN #. I'm really new to this. What info can be gotten from the VIN #? 366671M466903.

How can I tell if the engine is the original engine in the car?

In 1971 I believe they were using VIN derivative stamps on engines to identify which car they went with. There are others that know how to decode VINs.

3 = Oldsmobile Division
66 = Delta 88 Royale
67 = Convertible body style
1 = 1971 model year
M = Lansing, MI assembly plant
466903 = sequential build number (this sounds like a late 1971 production car)

As for the engine being original or not, there is a VIN derivative stamped on the driver's side of the block. This thread will have pictures of the VIN derivative and other identifying casting numbers:

If your engine is original, the VIN derivative will be 31M466903, which matches the first and last eight characters of your VIN.

3= Oldsmobile Division GM
66= Delta 88 Royale
67= Fisher body code for convertible
1= 1971
M= Lansing MI assembly plant
466903= vehicle sequential serial number

Look on the front left side of the engine below the head and behind the alternator bracket. There's a machined pad there that will have a VIN derivative stamped into it like 31M466903. If that matches the car VIN, car has its original engine. It should have G or GA heads and W and Z exhaust manifolds (the letters are cast into them). It should not have an EGR valve on the intake manifold.

Still having trouble finding engine derivative #. Found that it has W/Z manifolds, G head, but looked at all the suggested places and can't find engine #. Not really concerned, but previous to present owner had engine/trans out ,was going to restore it and I'm just curious if the original engine was put back in; everything else is original.
few questions:
A/C belt is not on: cruise control linkage to carb is missing, so I don't know if these work. Are these problem areas with this car? Is trunk compartment supposed to be carpet or bare metal?

One last question: What would be a good computer for this car? Since I've joined this group my wife keeps yelling "get off the computer, I want to use it." I try to read as many posts as I can..always learning something. Great site!!
