1971 Cutlass glove box retainer nut?
I just got a palm green cutty, 28k on odo, all original except for repaint and conversion to duals. 350 2bbl, small split in drivers side bench. Sounds, runs and looks like new, not a granny car, its a granpa car.
I'll post pics soon.
Current issue, we hit a rumble strip, and glove box popped open and two parts fell on floor, I have the metal decorative outside **** and key tumbler, and the latching mechanism which are now apart. I've done some pre work and I got an idea of how to put it back together, with the trunk key and the little secret tab.
I can't determine if I am missing a retaining nut to hold the lock on the GB door, but there are threads on it.
I'm debating buying an entire gb door on ebay if necessary,
Thanks, Bob

Yes there is a nut. Mine kept getting loose until i put a little lock-tite on it. Hold off on buying a whole set. Someone will have an extra. I might I will check when I get home. Where are you located? It is possible that someone local will have it.
Sounds like a good ride. Hope you enjoy it and welcome.

Catch needed
Don't mean to hi-jack the thread but while others are checking their supply of glovebox parts, thought I might sqeeze in another request. I could use a glovebox catch for a 72 Cutlass. Anybody have an extra one of these?

Welcome to CO Bob
Don't cha just love it when things fall apart right in front of you, just be gald it wasn't a wheel falling of then you'd have something to worry about. Post your location and someone might have the part that lives close to you

Welcome
I hate it when the glove box door pops open and the lock falls on the floor when I'm going over a rumble strip.
I'm still looking for the nut behind the wheel everybody's saying my car has when I drive it?

Thanks for the help so far. I had a feeling there was something missing, it is way too loose fully assembled. Thanks BlueVista for the diagram, that helps a lot.
I'm in Northeast Philadelphia if anyone has a spare retaining nut...the metal kind, we have enough nuts behind the wheel. :-)

Eureka
Thanks for the offer Larry.
We detailed her over the weekend, and found the escutcheon flange nut under the seat !
In the mean time, my 25 year old son won an ebay auction $15 for an entire GB door with hardware. (the car is a father and son effort)
Now I've got to figure out how to get this thing back together. I've hit a couple of articles that explain how to disassemble and they say "just do it in reverse"
I'm not sure if the decorative outside **** is supposed to turn around the lock cylinder, but after a hour of attempts, I gave up, Cooler minds work better, so I'll revisit later on today
Regards, Bob

Our first car show
Glove box went back together perfectly, works like new. The key lock even works.
We took our '71 to a local car show on Oct 25. Chilly day, but sunny. Pink hamburgers for lunch...mmm.

The judges seemed to look at the car for an awful long time, but no trophy this time.
Another '71 Olds owner suggested that we clean the engine compartment.
Do we Purple Power under the hood and remove the dust, or leave it alone as original as possible. I don't want somebody saying, 'aw dude, it would be worth more if you hadn't power washed the engine compartment.'
We plan to just use the car for a weekend driver, do the maintenance to keep it running. A trip to a local show would not be out of the question, but I see that shows could get really old, really fast.
