I'm looking around trying to find a 3/8-24 "tall nut" aka "high nut" in brass to use on my exhaust studs. I'm not having any luck.

I've tried places like NAPA, Fastenal, Grainger, McMaster, Sears Hardware, still no luck.

Any recommendations on where I can find these things? I'll need 3 of them for my left side crossover pipe, and 3 more to go on the 3/8-24 5-1/2 inch smooth body screws that mount the crossover and the main exhaust to the right header.

Surprisingly, the 5-1/2 inch smooth bolts are pretty hard to find as well.

By the way, if you Google coupling nuts, you can find them in brass at Fastenal, but only in 3/8 coarse thread. You can find them in 3/8 fine thread, but in stainless.

 

^^^ I think that is what the call a "sleeve nut."

"Coupling nut" is something different -- used to connect threaded rods.

The technical name for what I am looking for is a "high nut" or a "tall nut."

I just got back from fastenal. They carry "tall nuts" but not in brass.

What I'm looking for is something really simple. Just a tall, brass nut. Like this:



I've found them in metric at a moped site, of all places. but not anywhere in SAE sizes. Back in the day guys used to put them on exhausts all the time. I'm amazed that I can't find them today.

 

For example: Napa carries the 3/8-16 "Chevy High Nut". It's 5/8" tall, which makes it twice as tall as the standard 3/8-24 nut:

In the 3/8-24 Oldsmobile thread, they only carry a 21/64" tall standard nut, which half as tall and harder to grab onto without stripping it:

Thanks -- Those 1/2" tall nuts are actually the best I've seen so far. I just went 8 pages deep into a google search without finding that ebay listing or the tractor manifold nuts. I think that guessing the right search term might help.

I was thinking that on the right side of the exhaust, I could replace the 3/8-24 5-1/2 inch flat body screws with 3/8-16 5-1/2 inch flat body screws, which would allow me to use the Chevy-type Tall Nuts from NAPA. Then I'd only have to deal with 3 of the 24-piitch short brass nuts on the left side exhaust manifold studs.

 

Many years ago I worked in a parts store we used to get those from Dorman. Try googling them.

 

run a fine thread tap through your NC or metric nut and there you have it.

I've been told that stainless nuts suck on exhaust applications because stainless becomes brittle at high temps.

I looked at the Dorman line. The good news is that 3/8-16 brass tall nuts are readily available for the Chevy applications. The bad news is that 3/8-24 brass tall nuts for my Olds application aren't in the Dorman catalog -- even in the nut/stud kits. It looks like all of their 24-pitch brass nuts are the short type.

 

The 3 pack for Chevy works with W and Z manifolds.


I have them on my car now.

 

just adding some updated info:

the "tall nuts" in brass are widely available in 3/8-16 because chevy used them on the corvettes and others.
tall nuts are just not easy to find in 3/8-24 because they weren't used in any popular car applications.
to get something in 3/8-24 it looks like the only option is a short brass nut.

my solution, then, is to change over to 3/8-16 bolts or studs when feasible, and use the tall chevy nuts, or to just use short brass nuts on the 3/8-24 studs.

 

It's been several years ago, but, I recall buying replacement studs
for exhaust manifolds with brass nuts from NAPA.
They still have a selection of brass nuts.
I saw 3/8-16 and 3/8-24.
You'll need to look at the specs on each nut to see if they have the height you need.

Have you tried contacting a local distributor of fasteners? You might have to buy a box of 100, but I bet you can get anything you want. I did this years ago when I was looking for a machine screw of specific length, diameter, thread, head-type, and with a black-oxide finish. I couldn't find it through any retail store, but the distributor had it in stock.
