<br /><br />Those are the stamps indicating which inspector checked the car. You will see a varied combination of letters and alpha-numeric combinations on different cars. Inline Tube sells a sampling of stamps to recreate the factory markings. <br /><br /><div style="text-align:left;"></div>
Very nice find. Nicely optioned convertible. Someone else had documentation for a Cutlass that showed SS-IV wheels on the window sticker. I'm guessing it is for the SS-I type wheels that were all chrome and temporarily installed on A-bodies in 1971.
My friend bought a Lime green '71 Cutlass 'S' from a lady who ordered it new with the 350 4bbl dual exhaust combination, FE-2 package, along with a posi rear axle and disc brakes. Another friend bought a Bittersweet '71 Cutlass 'S' from the original owner that he ordered with an M-20 4-speed, 350 4-bbl dual exhaust, FE-2 package, with a posi rear axle and disc brakes. And my brother bought an Ebony black Cutlass 'S' that he bought from the original owner that was ordered with the 350 4-bbl dual exhaust combination, FE-2 package, with posi rear axle and disc brakes.
All three of the original owners said they were going to purchase a 442 but changed their minds fir various reasons at the last minute and decided upon a Cutlass ordered with these same options to make their Cutlass similar to a 442.
Interesting about the chrome rims. Be patient as I am still learning. What is standard on a 442 that is not on my car besides the obvious trim/badging? Thanks. Dave

The 1971 SPECS booklet lists the standard and optional equipment for each model line. The standard equipment is on the left of each page.
I've made that same decision with my 71 SX convertible. I have the BF Goodrich lettered tires on my other two cars with SS111s. There is no way I'm doing the same on a third, and this car came with G70-14 pin stripe whitewalls when new, as did my 71 442, so I ordered from Diamond Back,

made from BF Goodrich tires. (expensive though)
I really like the repro SS1s, so I'll be ordering them as well. I'm also going to 15s for the first time.
The whitewalls seem to suit a Supreme so much better than letters in my opinion.

Ok, thought I would take on an easy task of replacing positive battery cable. Yeah right. This is a 4-speed, so I have the tube on back of block. I have nut disconnected and cable off. What is the trick? Do i have to disconnect the tube, drop the starter, or?? Help, before i take a hammer to this original paint. Chevy-1, Olds-0, on this one.
Thanks! I will get more detailed pics of engine bay for you original fanatics. I found inspection marks on underside of hood above hood hinge, and there is an X and looks like a C on drivers side valve cover. All I have changed under hood are original type heater / radiator hoses & clamps, date coded plug wires, battery cables, battery topper. I did have to blast and paint / new decal the air cleaner lid. Otherwise looks untouched.
Does any Oldsmobile shows offer a "legendary" class inspection? I am considering taking it to Corvette and Musclecar nationals in Chicago in November. It takes 3-4 hours of people going over originality of the car. Must be 85% + to get Legendary status. It costs $550.00. Does anyone do this in the Oldsmobile world? I know it doesn't need it, but it helps to have "experts" agree to what it is, especially when it comes to claims of originality. Thoughts?

Steve, my bad on reversing the names. Well aware of the show as you know I have been there several times. You getting my messages? Have called a couple of times to your shop. Just wasn't sure if there was a "Oldsmobile" specific judging venue at their national shows? I talked to Steve S. last week for 45 minutes last week about it. Great guy. He did have openings. I emailed him as he asked me to so he could get me the information. Could use a weekend in Chicago. Great show to say the least. Dave
Attended MCACN this past weekend and if you have not been to this show, put it on your list at some point. Must see. All makes and cars you probably haven’t seen. Car did better than I expected at the Legend Certification program. To obtain Legend certification you have to have at least a 85% score in 6 areas of judging. Car did that, and also had an overall score of 92.6%. They told me 8 hours it took. I dont think i have looked at it that much. Pretty stoked. I knew it was a special car, but to have it confirmed is great. Great show. Dave

Congrats - that's a beautiful Cutlass. I was there most of the time when Steve Minore and Paul Martin went over your car top to bottom on Friday. It didn't even occur to me at the time that it was the same car we had been discussing here.
I was completely smitten with the brown '69 Grand Prix SJ 4 speed and the black Stage 1 that were near your car.
