1967 turnpike cruiser

I shouldn't have but I did ... I picked up a 67 Cutlass Supreme Turnpike Cruiser post. It looks rough but it really isn't bad at all. The previous owner started to remove all the chrome to find any hidden rust but there's hardly anything. It's a champagne colour(that looks gold) with the vinyl roof ripped off and painted black. The seats have been replaced with 80's style both front and back. I'll have to find replacements. It came with the turnpike air cleaners for both 2bbl & 4bbl with a 4bbl intake and carb. The trunk had lots of extra parts including a 60's aftermarket cruise control unit still in the box. It's an a/c car and the 442 hood came with it.
My son did all the research and is in love with it.
The turnpike is a basically a 442 without the hood and 442 call-outs.
To top it all off my brother-in-law goes and buys a 60,000 mile hardtop turnpike complete and in excellent survivor condition; aquamarine with black roof and black bucket interior.

Good find. What is it about the 66-67 cars that looks so good!

I'd say seats should be easy enough to find esp if it's a column shift car. Buckets might get pricey, but an A-body bench should go cheap.

The Climatic Combustion Control system and aircleaner wasn't limited to the TC though- it could be had on any engine in any series that year, though the Cruiser included it.

Seems like one year had a special Turnpike Cruiser trunk badge, but I can't remember if it was 67 or 68.

[where did you find it?]
I found this car way up here in Edmonton, Alberta. My brother-in-law found his up here too. There's a lot of cars hiding up here and further north as well. Most of the cars have rust but amazingly our cars are in decent condition.
We seem to have an addiction to Oldsmobiles. Last year he bought a fully optioned 68 Vista Cruiser. He's had a 67 Holiday Coupe for 20+ years.
I've had my 68 Vista Cruiser for 14 years and still trying to sell my 67 Vista (and 68 Olds 98 4dr LS, 68 Delta Custom loaded and 75 Cutlass Supremes 2dr and 4dr)

Did you get it to run?
I haven't even tried to start it. There are a few wiring issues. My son has had his 67 442 apart in his garage for a few years now waiting for time and cash to restore it. He wants to trade parking spots and take this one into his garage for the winter and start working on it. It's been his dream to have a post model and this one just needs a little TLC (and my cash) to get it up and running. He's the mechanic in the family, I'm the parts replacer guy - I spent 2 days replacing starters in the other car until I figured out the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the starter over.

My brother-in-law sent me a few pictures of his Turnpike Cruiser.
1967 Olds Cutlass Supreme Turnpike Cruiser
62,000 original miles
L66 option package 400 CI engine, 2 bbl, 10.25:1 300 HP 2:45:1 differential
TH 400 "switch pitch" transmission
HD 442 frame, boxed rear control arms, HD front and rear away bars

I have to say it's quite nice for an original car - especially for the price he got it for.

Talking

He also sent a picture of his first 442 that he bought in '68. This is the car he drove while dating my older sister. It's his fault that I have a passion for Oldsmobiles (especially the aquamarine colour).
Yes he did drive it with those heavy deluxe hubcaps. He tells me that the wheels were balanced with the hubcaps on.
I don't see them on any cars anymore. My 67 Vista Cruiser came with a set but they're lounging in my storage shed - I've been thinking about putting them on one of the cars but I need to find a set of wheels first.

Hi George
I've got a CCC air cleaner I removed from a 1967 Toronado. What I don't have is the shroud that fits around the A-body exhaust pipe and the line that runs up to the air cleaner. I've been told they tend to rust away and are hard to find. If you have an extra one of those in your collection would you be interested in selling or trading it? John

John, mine has the same rust problem. I have the hose down to the exhaust - the rest is rusted.

"TC" emblem...

A friend of mine several years ago had a Turnpike Cruiser and actually had some kind of factory piece of paper that showed a "TC" emblem on the back trunk lid--but he had never actually seen one on a car. So...

Being a very talented jewelry designer he cast a "TC" emblem and had it chromed and attached it to his Turnpike Cruiser.

He told me later that he had received many double takes from enthusiasts who started to walk by his car at a show...and then noticed the "TC" on the trunk lid.

I had a Turnpike Cruiser myself until 5 or so years ago and I sold it.

I still have the 2 BBL CCC aircleaner though.

Have a great Christmas!

Be careful with those CCC aircleaners. Depending on application, there ARE significant differences in them that are not readily apparent till you try to install it.

I made the assumption they were all the same. I'd planned to use the Toro one on a 1967 442 project.... I guess I'll find out if they will interchange!

Welcome aboard!!

Stupid question - what makes this car a "turnpike cruiser"? Just really haven't read a lot about them. What makes them different from a Cutlass?

Cheers,
Wayne

Another new series for Olds for 1967 came with the Cutlass Supreme, introduced as just a single model the previous year. The Supreme was the only series in which the popular 4-4-2 and the high-mileage Turnpike Cruising option could be ordered. Five models were offered in this top-of-the-line, F-85-based range.

what makes this car a "turnpike cruiser"?

The Turnpike Cruiser package included a 400 engine with a 2bbl. It was the 2-bbl 400ci motor, along with highway gears (2.56:1, usually), that was optimized for, you guessed it, cruising on the turnpike. In 1967 Olds offered the Turnpike Cruiser option on non-442 Cutlii. This was a 400 cu in 2 bbl motor with an unusual air cleaner assembly which used a hot air stove to help atomize the fuel for better fuel economy. In 1968 a similar 2 bbl 400 cu in package was also offered, but that year it was on the 442 only. Also, the 400 was offered in the Vista Cruiser during those years. Press releases for '67 imply it was available on Cutlass Supreme sedans as well, but there was a later "downgrade" option for the '68-'69 442 with this type of combination, for those more concerned with effortless cruising than all-out performance. This idea was carried over for the early-production 2-bbl '70 SX, which came with the highway gear.

Sorry, just had to add this bit

The first time I saw a 1968 442 with a 2bbl carb I thought Whaaaaaaat?

I had a 1972 Vista Cruiser with a 455 and 2bbl. I don't know the cfm rating on those 2bbl carbs, but it wasn't bad. It didn't have the kick of the secondaries but it moved along smartly. Not what I would have expected for such a large car. I still struggle a little with the idea of taking a big block and putting a 2bbl on it. I wonder how the gas milage would match up to say a 350 2bbl or even 4 bbl engine? John
