1964 f-85

Hi, couple new olds guys here. We picked up a 64' f-85 about 2 months ago, fixed it up a bit and drive it nearly every day. It seems to be running fine but it's only getting 7.8 mpg. It's all city mileage, but it seems like that is a little low. Does anyone know what kind of mileage I should be getting? Thanks

That is pretty sharp !!! Welcome to CO !!!

Alittle more info on drive train might help answer your question

What motor does it have is it stock?
What trans , rear end gears?
My 65 with a stock 330 but has a Eddie carb 650cfm seems to get around 10mph if I keep my foot out of her

Wow, with that setup, I would think it would go a little faster.

Thanks for the reply, what we know:
Stock 330 V8
2 Barrel Rochester, Original
Single Glass-pack Exhaust
Jetaway Automatic Tranny
245/60/14 BFG's

We think RPM's are running high, about 1700 at 40 mph.

We'll check this out more accurately tomorrow, and we'll find out rear axel ratio.

We were thinking that with such a lightweight car, we could do a bit better than 8 to the gallon.

Mileage should be in the mid-teens, so obviously something is wrong.

What are your plans / process down the road to eliminate the dent in the drivers door ?

It's not really difficult. I can't see his face nor hear his voice. All I can do is read what he wrote. What catches my eye is the juxtaposition that results in a logical sentence but usually with a meaning the opposite of what was intended, and it's often pretty funny as it was in this case.

It's EASY to proofread what you write before hitting that "submit reply" button. There's even a "preview post" button. It always surprises me that so many people don't take advantage of this.

In the online world, you are what you write!

Welcome to CO. Your car looks great, I like '64's
It does seam like you should get better mileage. maybe do a complete tune up, and rebuild the carb. You could upgrade to a T-350 trans.
Dual exhaust should help some.
What part of the country are you ?

Hi, yes I also agree you should be getting better mileage than that. My 63 Buick with the 401 4bbl set up gets 11-12 around town and 15-16 on the highway. Unless you have some serious gears in that car, you should be doing much much better than 7-8 mpg IMHO.

Thanks for the responses,

We believe the rear axle ratio is 2.76, and we were getting about 2200 RPM's at 60 mph.

Can anybody please explain the jetaway automatic transmission? We are not sure we completely understand it and there is a small switch in the engine compartment that is faulty that seems to connect to the transmission. We think it it switches the tranny into high when you take your foot off the gas. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Might do a tune up too.

Might try 'timing by ear' for mileage - advance 'til ping, and turn it back 2 degrees.
Switch might be for the 'switch-pitch' converter, in your case, literally!
Try it in both positions while accelerating hard from a stop - one position may see the RPM's climb higher until the car moves.

I'm not a big pro in that area , but I'm sure someone will chime in that will steer you in the right direction .... my guess would be trying to pull the dent out a bit first and then some filler maybe , but the paint is so nice on the car , i wouldn't want it to get it all scratched up or anything

I've had good luck with the paintless dent removal companies, though admittedly on newer cars that might have used thinner sheetmetal. The results weren't show-car perfect, but it did look a lot better.

The switch underhood is the electrical downshift switch. If that switch is stuck in downshift the transmission will never shift into high gear which might explain your lousy fuel mileage. If it also controls the switch-pitch, if the converter is stuck in the wrong angle for conditions, the car will be very sluggish off the line with poor fuel mileage.

Had a 64 Tempest years ago that had that problem- every couple months I'd have to shoot some WD40 into the downshift switch to free it up so the trans would shift. It had a nasty habit of getting stuck on a cold start when you set the automatic choke.

We unplugged it a while back, we'll try and get it working again.

Thanks

Even worse mileage this tank, were going to check out a few things tonight, anybody happen to know how much the gas tank holds? Ran it out today and when I filled it took 16 gallons, and the gas gauge was only 3/4 to full.

Thanks
