1962 Cutlass F-85 Convertible

Hello-
This is my first chat room and first info gathering. My son, Dalton (13) and I recently purchased a 62' Cutlass F-85 Convertible from a farmer in Northern California and towed it to our home in Bend, OR. It is in our garage drying out. We plan to do a complete restoration. We have never done one before. I myself, rebuilt a 1964 Olds F-85 about 25 years ago, but only rebuilt the 330 and trans. We are interested in gathering information for parts and bouncing off questions to members, that have done this before. Hopefully we are in the correct area. We plan on a two-three year project---

Welcome. Unfortunately the 61-63 cars are not that popular and thus not well supported in the aftermarket. The 215 cu in aluminum engine is very cool, however. It's actually a Buick design based on the Buick V6 that has evolved into the 3800. Despite the front engine/rear drive layout, the 61-63 cars are actually based on the Corvair architecture.

We are currently stripping it down to take to a shop to sandblast. Any thoughts in regards to this?

We need both rear quarters as they have some rust in the lower parts, but if parts are hard to find then maybe we will need to spot these with sheets of metal?

Northern California.... this may be the car you bought. If not it sounds like this person is into the 61-63 Cutlass and may have spare parts/know where to look. John

Thank you citcapp- I have done a lot of searching on the web and it does not have much on 62 f-85. But the more and longer I search the little bits of pieces I start gathering. I have checked out www.fusick.com and they have some parts. I will keep hanging on. classicoldsmobile is the best information source. thanks again--

Another idea, post a parts wanted ad in the Medford Craigslist. This last spring someone in Eagle Point Oregon had a 1961-63 Cutlass convertible project for sale. Pictures looked bad because the paint on the car was mottled so I really don't know what kind of condition it was in. They listed it for a couple months and may not have sold it. It might be a good parts car for you. John

You won't find any repro panels, so either a parts car or hand-fabricated patches are required.

We had almost went down to Grants Pass and looked at a 62 f-85 convertible project car, but it was sold recently to someone out of CA for $400. It was only a shell of a vehicle and would have needed a parts car to transfer EVERYTHING over from. I will post a partswanted-Thank you

Joe- Thanks, I kinda thought this would be the case after looking around the net for a while. I am sure we will uncover some more areas after sandblasting, but overall the vehicle is in great shape-original color and seats, or what was left of them-at least the seat is there-springs and all the chrome...

Welcome to our site. We look forward to seeing pics when you get a chance. Kanter is another good supplier for things like shocks, brakes, and mechanical parts.

62 Olds cutlass

Hi I purchased a 62 convertible from the Sacremento CA area a couple of years ago and have been restoring it to original since. I'm about 90% complete and have been going to shows this summer and getting a lot of attetion. It's one of my favorites. Also have a 71 Jag etype and a 78 Avanti. I have a number of parts left over and don't think I'll ever need them so as your restoration moves along let me know the parts you need and maybe I have some of them, sorry no quarter panels. Russ

The pic's in the album towards the end get to small to see any detail. It also looks like somebody at one time converted to alternator. All '62's I've had or delt with had generators.
You have made considerable progress, looks great. I'm sure you made notes, as to what goes where for reassembly.
I'd love to find another '61 or 62 but I just have to many projects right now.

Gene

Welcome I so love the father and son projects. My only advice is to be patient and try not to be condescending.
