1955 Olds 88 - New Guy With No Brains
1955 Olds 88 - New Guy With No Brains
I'll try not to have a million questions.
I'm still in the middle of a build of the second 67-72 Chevy Truck. My friend calls and says that his wife's Uncle died. Tom left this 56 Olds parked. He parked it in 1985 in his garage in the East Bay area of San Francisco.
My buddy asked me what it was worth. I did some figuring as best as I could with just pictures, e-bay, and this forum to go by. I suggested a craigslist ad and offered to do the ad for him. He said, "Annette wants you to
have this". "Make any offer and I'll say yes".
I offered a price to get started, based upon a completed restoration vs the cost to get the Olds to that point. But I told him that if I spun it instead of re-furbishing it, I'd give them some dough if I didn't lose anything.
I hope to get it running and enjoy it....I don't really have the dough to make a collector or a hot rod. And, because it is all there, no rust, the new project, which I'll call "Tom" (much to the liking of Annette), will be a survivor.
Tom's coming home to Coarsegold (up by Yosemite National Park in California...hot right now) on Saturday with the help of a friend with a car trailer (all four off the ground). I hope I don't get too wordy.
Or ask too many stupid questions. But as a tired, 65 year old Grandpa of 6
, time isn't really on my side. So, I tend to not be shy about asking...And I'm not shy with pictures in the process. Thanks in advance to all.
The link below has some pics...a few of the '68/'71 Chevy 1/2 t, short bed.

Nice acquisition. Keep us posted on the Custom Sport Truck, my first vehicle was a 72 Chevy pickup, so I have soft spot for them. If you post info on other forums about the CST, let me know the website so I can go see the progress.

Welcome to CO
Nice Olds, looks to be in good shape. Nice truck too. We can handle the questions, ask away. Several of us are on the other side on the hill so we help each other out
. The young guys help out too. They even remind us when they thing we are wrong.

I also love the 50's era cars, looks as though you found a good one. A lot of us with 50's cars hang out on the vantage forum you may get a better response on your questions on that forum as some of us seldom venture to the nu bee section Even though we should. There is a lot of good people and advice shared there
Good to see another Northern Cal. resident on this board.I live a bit north east of you In the mountains near Chico...Tedd

Welcome Magawa, the car does look nice. I'm sort of in the same situation as you, but restorations are coming to a end now. My Wife and I ended up inheriting our 1955 Olds Super 88 from her Uncle who had worked at the GM factory in Oshawa, Ontario all his life before passing away.
It takes time and patience and trust me I'm still asking people stupid questions when it come to this car in repair work.
But they are lovely to drive, they float down the highway, but keep your eye on the speedometer, you don't realize how fast your actual going.
