Seeing progress on a Saturday morning makes for a good weekend. Can't wait to see more!

Did your body guy quote you a price or is he doing it time and materials?

He quoted an estimated price, between $12-15k, but it's time and materials. He keeps an individual log book with the car and logs everything.

He did a lot of work on the dash, grafted in both a-pillar corners from the donar piece.

Here is a pic of how bad they were

Definitely swiss cheesed. Looks like he knows what he's doing. I've said it before but I'll say it again how much respect I have for these old school body guys. I love seeing them mend these old cars. It's nice that he let's you come in and check on progress. I loved checking in on mine when it was at that stage.

I agree, and that is the number one reason I wanted it to be done close to me, where I could check on it. The really good thing is he is a good communicator, not only telling me what is going on; but also listening to what I am saying. Makes you feel like you are a part of the process. Where some shops are I am the expert here, don't worry about it attitude. Not his personality in any way.

I am very happy with the process so far. I know it will be longer with him doing it, but that is ok as I know I will be happy with the finished project when done.

Thanks Tom, He said this part would take the most time as far as metal work, and wanted to tackle it first to make sure there were no significant issues he did not feel comfortable with.

I havent commented but I have been watching yours, the top and everything looks really nice. I have already made notes on the sail panels.

3rd Time a Charm

Currently, my son and I are deadheading with empty trailer back across the lower part of Ohio. He is driving by the way. Body shop guy number 2 had health issues, and I had to change to body shop #3. We went to body shop 2 first thing this morning loaded up the body and headed to the other side of the state and dropped it off today. I think we are going to see some continuous progress now.

Sorry to hear about the health issues causing you to move your car to another shop.
Things never seem to go the way you want them to so I hope shop #3 works for you Troy. I have my car back at the body shop and hope to have it finished sometime in August so I can at least have it to use this fall, best of luck going forward.

Thanks Tom,

Did you get your rear deck emblems in. Rick said he sent you a template. Mine in the same shop that did Ricks now.

Yes and no, I drilled the holes with the template but my trunk stated it was a "44" when I gave the car to the body shop to do some finish work last week. I did the template drilling but I was short two barrel clips. The shop is taking care of putting in the "2" for me while they have it.

Why yes, it was an option for 1970 only I wonder if my car is the rarest of all, as I know of no other car to exist with this option... lol Thank you Rick for the template!

It was the "rare" (race air restriction expelled) option that was identified with a "-2" on the build sheet. I sure hope you kept the build sheet.

My son asked how I came to the guy in Cincinnati, and I was telling him that there is usually two or thre guys that are going through the build process at the same time, and they naturally build a cohort to commiserate and encourage. When this is all done the three of us should get together with our cars.

It would be great to meet up with you and Rick when we're done. It's been great reading and learning from Rick's thread and yours Troy of things I need to do with my car and things I might have overlooked. I hope smooth sailing from this point on for all three of us.

I was down at the shop last night and saw the metal work that's been completed. It's looking really good. The body is very solid in all the right places.

Tom, yes progress is bringing me out of the slumps, and making me feel a lot better.

Rick, I am going to stop in next Thursday morning, while taking the daughter back to college. I am excited to see it.

Thanks Stefano! I had a chance to stop by the shop yesterday, and as the Mrs. said it is almost like it is a completely different car due to the amount of progress that has been made on it. He is still working on the welds, and will hammer and dolly them as he sands them down. It will look nice when he gets done.

They've been hard at it the last couple of weeks. Glad you were able to stop in and check on the progress. Hope you are satisfied with the quantity and quality of work.

Yep. It looks good. I happened to see a 455 back together and ready for a coat of paint. You wouldn't know who this might belong to? John said you have about 3-4 hours of run time on the stand. That should make you feel better.

Picking it up this evening and installing it tomorrow. Should be cruising Sunday.

John was on a mission to figure out what happened to that motor. He has a couple of theories but nothing concrete. There seemed to be an oiling problem but that's really all that's evident. I'm really impressed that he has that motor back together, painted and ready to stab back in within a 2 week period.
It sounded really good on the run stand and the oil pressure was strong so yes, I do feel good about it. If it comes apart again I will probably push it into the river.

Don't worry about pushing it in the river, I told John I'll just come and get it. I have a motor or two lying around😎

Great job by your body guy Troy, looking forward to seeing your car's body work completed and painted. I'm also glad to hear that Rick's motor is back together and running well.

Scratching head

Just read your whole thread here, really into it...I'm confused though on what happened to body guy #1? Was it taking him too long? Seemed everything was going great with him, windshield channel, dash work, etc. There is a huge gap in updates that is missing it seems, from Dec 16' to July 17'. Am I missing something?

Thanks Tom, Sorry I didnt get back to you earlier. I saw you post and then got distracted. Spending time with daughter before she started her Senior year at college, and we were headed to the movies.

Hows the fender situation going?

Actually Body guy #1 was a no start waited about 9 months on him. Body guy#2 did the dash and window channel. He had an illness and it was going to be a long recovery, and there was at least 3 vehicles ahead of me in the rotation for him to finish. It was mutually agreed that he would have a difficult time finishing mine by next year. No updates because little to update. Now at Body guy #3, and we are moving along.
